Grand Theft Hamlet, a 2024 British documentary about staging William Shakespeare’s Hamlet in Grand Theft Auto Online during the UK's COVID-19 lockdown in 2021, is all set to release on February 21st on MUBI.
Shot entirely in GTA 5, the feature documentary scored a staggering 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, leaving fans eager to check it out. However, many have also laughed at the idea or ridiculed it, questioning the need for such a film.
Hilarious fan reactions
Fans were highly amused by the first clip of Grand Theft Hamlet. Let's check out some of their funniest reactions.
"We got hamlet in gta 5 before gta 6 💀," joked a fan.
Well, the million-dollar question everyone's been asking is, how has a movie shot entirely in GTA 5 come out before GTA 6? Fans have been waiting for over a decade now for the game, but it seems Rockstar is really pushing the saying, "good things come to those who wait."
"Could've at least used the camera app on the phone or turned off the map," commented another.
It appears we have a filmmaker in our midst, pointing out some mistakes the makers might have made while shooting the movie. Perhaps they intentionally kept the camera angles and map layout to maintain the authentic GTA world feel.
"Interesting, a version of Hamlet where to be or not to be involves car chases 😁," another user joked.
As this user hilariously points out, it would be interesting to see what meaning Hamlet's famous line, "To be or not to be," takes on in the GTA universe. Will it be about car chases, hunting enemies, or blowing up buildings?
Scorsese approves! (via @QuboiArt / X)
Wow, Grand Theft Hamlet just received an ultimate stamp of approval — from Martin Scorsese himself! Maybe it’s time for a sequel called Grand Theft Macbeth, which they should also release before GTA 6!
"It’s wild how this got higher on rotten tomatoes than Captain America: Brave New World 💀," a user pointed out.
Wait a minute, did Grand Theft Hamlet just score higher on Rotten Tomatoes than Captain America: Brave New World? Now that’s a serious flex!
"I still can't believe it isn't a joke," said another.
Looks like we just had a classic case of "too bad to be true," as this user thought Grand Theft Hamlet was just a joke meant to troll all the fans still waiting for GTA 6!
GTA fans may not have GTA 6 yet, but they sure got something unexpected — a Shakespeare play set in GTA 5! Whether Grand Theft Hamlet leaves them more hyped or just angrier about the wait, February 21, 2025 on MUBI will tell.
