With nominations and awards all over the place, Emilia Pérez has been sweeping the award circuits. After winning at the Golden Globes, the French director Jacques Audiard's film is now fighting for an unprecedented 13 Oscar nominations.

While Selena Gomez's Emilia Pérez has charmed The Academy and racked up the most Oscar nominations for the March 2025 ceremony, Emilia Pérez's role in the film is now the subject of some serious internet side-eye. It’s like everyone’s suddenly turned into movie critics who question whether Gomez is a star or just someone they’d rather see in a Wizard of Waverly Place rerun.

Gomez plays Jessi Del Monte in the musical thriller Emilia Pérez and her performance has earned praise, particularly from those in the American film industry. Her co-stars aren’t going unnoticed either, with Karla Sofo Gascón and Zoe Saldana receiving rave reviews and emerging at the Oscars as strong contenders.

But let's admit it... while Selena Gomez might think she has Emilia Pérez in her bag the internet has decided otherwise. The meme machines have gone into an overdrive to roast her claim by tossing out every Hollywood name imaginable.

One Twitter user (or should we say X) decided to put Selena Gomez’s Emilia Pérez performance to the ultimate test posting,

"For every like I will name a better supporting actress than Selena Gomez."

With each notification, the list grew longer.

As the likes kept rolling in, the dedication was almost admirable - like a movie buff’s version of a marathon. No one was off-limits to classics, newcomers, or even actors who hadn’t been in a film since the VHS era.

Someone somewhere in Hollywood Meryl Streep may have felt a sudden surge of energy suddenly without knowing why. Selena Gomez was probably just drinking her coffee, scrolling the cat videos while YouTube cast half of Hollywood in her role.

Let me walk you through the comment section of the post!

Literally anyone but Selena Gomez: A thread

Margaret Qualley could replace Selena Gomez

First, the user (@PUSHED2START) said Margaret Qualley could replace Selena Gomez:

"margaret qualley in the substance"

After that comes Ariana Grande!

"ariana grande in wicked"

Monica Barbaro is better

Then, she (@PUSHED2START) thinks Monica Barbaro can be a perfect supporting actor instead of Selena Gomez:

"monica barbaro in a complete unknown"

Or maybe Jodie Foster is a better option

Somebody (@PUSHED2START) also claimed that Jodie Foster would have been a better supporting actress than Selena Gomez. And honestly, they are probably onto something. She wasn’t even in the movie but let's face it - she probably still could walk away with an Oscar:

"jodie foster in nyad"

Is this a cue for Taylor Swift to grace the screens?

And just when things couldn’t get more chaotic, someone threw Taylor Swift into the mix and claimed she could easily erase Selena Gomez from Emilia Pérez. Now let’s be honest- Swift has conquered music broken records and even dabbled in acting. However, could she outshine Selena on screen? Well given her Eras Tour stamina she could probably film the entire movie in one take and still have energy left for a surprise album drop.

"taylor swift in cats (unironically)"

Selena Gomez barely made it through the first credits and it feels like the internet is staging its version of The Hunger Games: Best Supporting Actress Edition. Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande have joined the list of "better choice" that is expanding faster than the cast of a Marvel movie.

If this pattern continues someone might probably recommend their neighbor's cat drama queen as a better choice. And truthfully? The Internet should accept the deal.

Finally, while Emilia Pérez gathers praise, Selena Gomez is busy dodging online mockeries like it's an Olympic sport. Whether or not she is deserving of the criticism, the internet always has a way of turning a disagreement into a total catastrophe.
