Twitch is offering Discounted Community Gift Subscriptions, which are temporary discounts on buying multiple Tier 1 gift subscriptions (bundles of 5 or more). While Twitch runs these discounts occasionally, the upcoming phase will run from March 27, 2025 (10 AM PT) to March 31, 2025 (10 AM PT).

On March 18, the company took to its X handle, stating:

“We're adding a new toggle allowing creators to opt out of discount events for viewers. This will not apply to some discount events, such as SUBtember.”

This was enough fuel for the virtual forest fire aka the internet.

Fans misinterpreted thinking Twitch has made a significant change regarding overall gifted subscriptions meaning streamers will be allowed to disable discounts on subs.

While this is true for the upcoming discount session, the same does not apply all year round.

The internet, meanwhile, ran with numerous roasts and jokes about subs, with users mainly speculating that only those streams who despise their fans will redeem this offer.

However, Twitch updated their original tweet, clarifying:

“This setting only applies to some promotional events that further increase the gift sub bundle discount from it’s current rate. It does not change the pricing of gift sub bundles offered to your community outside of these events.”

By the time they clarified their stance, the internet had already run wild with humorous jabs. Let’s take a look at what users thought about the misinterpreted message.

How social media reacted to the assumption that Twitch removed discounts from gifted subs altogether

Fans humorously wagged fingers at streamers who appeared to resent their own audience, teasing they would be the first to turn on this feature without hesitation.

A user @0rmsbee asked:

"What streamer hates their viewers this much?"

Yet another user @JamesMulamb added:

"Oh this is crazy only money-hungry streamers would do this."

Another user reacted with a perfectly hilarious GIF:

A user dropped a GIF that probably screamed tanked sales.

Others wondered who even came up with the idea in the first place.

One user @fanocsgo served a roast, saying:

"Imagine thinking this is a good idea 😭"

Another user @MTB1722 added:

"Just file for unemployment."

Meanwhile, out of the blue, Pokimane and Amouranth picked up strays, with users joking that they'd be the first to activate this feature.

A user @ninehalo369 humorously took a jab stating:

"So streamers like Pokimane and Amouranth can start ripping people off even more to make boring content ???"

Some users flat-roasted the streaming platform, stating that perhaps they need more money or that nothing they've done in the last year has ever made sense—so this is just another cherry on top.

Meanwhile, a user @Heightzzz went on to say:

"sounds like twitch needs more money"

A user @RomiArcade straight-up mentioned:

"nothing twitch has done the past year has made any sense"

What are Twitch's Discounted Community Gift Subscriptions?

Twitch's Discount Community Gift Subscriptions are exclusive temporary promotions on the purchase of several Tier 1 gift subscriptions simultaneously. You receive a discounted price when you purchase 5 or more gift subs.

These discounts appear occasionally and apply to both desktop and mobile.

The aim is to make it easier to gift subs, so more individuals can contribute to their favorite streamers.

Streamers continue to make money from these discounted subs since more individuals will purchase them during the sale. But if a streamer does not wish to be included in this, then they can disable the discount feature in their settings.

This change doesn’t apply during Twitch’s SUBtember event, when subs are cheaper for everyone.

During SUBtember, the television broadcaster makes sure streamers still get their full earnings, even with the discounts.

So, streamers can benefit from big promos while still controlling their subprices for the rest of the year.
