What is National Science Fiction Day?
National Science Fiction Day is an unofficial holiday celebrated by thousands of science fiction fans all over the USA. It is celebrated on January 2, the birth date of acclaimed science fiction writer Isaac Asimov.
Isaac Asimov was an American writer and biochemistry professor at Boston University. Asimov, with Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke, is considered one of the 'Big Three' science fiction writers. His most acclaimed works include the Foundation series, the Galactic Empire series, and the Robot series.
In 1968, his social science fiction novelette Nightfall was voted the best short science fiction story of all time by Science Fiction Writers of America. In 1966, the first three books of the Foundation series won the Hugo Award for 'Best All-Time Series.'
Although included in the National Day Calendar, the US authorities do not officially recognize the holiday. Organizations like Hallmark Channel and Scholastic Corporation have made it up to celebrate the science fiction genre.
