Dwayne Wade received one of the biggest honors in NBA history on October 27, as the Miami Heat unveiled his statue outside their home arena, Kaseya Center. The sculpture pays tribute to the Miami Heat legend who was with the team for over a decade and led the team through three championships.

The much-anticipated event had NBA fans all hyped up, but the excitement soon turned into shock as the sculpture looked nothing like Dwayne Wade. The 42-year-old NBA star attending the event looked equally surprised and was seen in a viral video asking - "That’s crazy. I can’t believe it… Who is that guy?"

The images and videos of the awkwardly sculpted statue making rounds on the internet triggered an online meme fest in no time. One of the netizens couldn't believe how badly the statue was made and tweeted satirically:

"This is why we need to bring back art institutions."

The internet was flooded with jokes and memes as netizens couldn't help having a laugh about Wade's awkwardly sculpted statue:

"D Wade knew he was cooked 😂😂," said one user.
"Looks like he and captain jack had a baby," tweeted an X user.
"This sculpture has no idea who D-Wade is," joked another netizen.
"Kids will walk by and ask their parents, “Who is that?” And their parents will reply, “I don’t know who that’s a statue of”," said a user.

The meme fest continued with netizens joking about the looks of the statue or how the sculpture failed to do its only job:

"Y'all had one job. Lol smh," tweeted a netizen.
"He looks like he put on The Mask," said a user while referring to Jim Carrey's 1994 film.
"In honor of Dwayne Wade’s illustrious career, the Miami Heat have put up a statue of Laurence Fishburne.," joked an X user.
"The dwayne wade statue looks like hes riding a invisible motorcycle," said another user.

A look at Dwayne Wade's time with the Miami Heat and statue unveiling ceremony amid the viral meme fest

Dwayne Wade joined the Miami Heat in the 2003 NBA draft. He led the team to their first-ever NBA championship title in June 2006. Wade mostly played as the shooting guard for the Miami Heat and was part of the big three that led the team to consecutive championships in 2012 and 2013.

The Miami Heat legend, Dwayne Wade, is the all-time leading scorer in the team's history and has been one of the most influential NBA stars. Wade marked another history on October 27, 2024, when the Miami Heat honored him as the first player to have a statue outside their home area.

The sculpture was first announced by the Miami Heat president, Pat Riley, in early 2024. It is sculpted from bronze and represents Wade's iconic "This is my house" moment. The historic moment was captured in a 2009 game against the Chicago Bulls when he jumped on a courtside table following a buzzer-beater.

Dwayne Wade was seemingly moved as he unveiled his statue on Sunday. Sharing his experience with the audience, the 42-year-old former basketballer said:

“This is crazy. I wanted to feel this. Life goes by so fast and it’s very rare that we get to feel things, because we’re always off to the next thing. … I wanted to feel this, man. I wanted to look at it.”

Wade's statue outside the Haseya Center also includes a 'history wall' listing all his accomplishments over the 16 years of his magnanimous NBA career. Fans visiting the Miami Heat home arena can find the statue and the history wall right outside the arena's front door.

Dwayne Wade is one of the six Miami Heat players whose jersey numbers were retired by the team. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in April 2023.
