Fans' hearts broke on the internet when they learnt that WandaVision's Agatha All Along will not be renewed for a second season. The much-awaited sequel to Kathryn Hahn's iconic Agatha Harkness is completely off the table, according to Patti Lupone, who plays the enigmatic witch Lilia Calderu.
Lupone claims that Jac Schaeffer, the show's creator, had no intentions for a second season because he had "too much to write." This choice was made in spite of the fact that Agatha Harkness swiftly gained popularity among fans after her eerily catchy theme tune, "Agatha All Along," went viral online.
Given that Hahn's performance in WandaVision was praised for her dark humour and oh-so-delightful charm, the disappointment was evident. The sadness of fans has only increased with Patti Lupone's confirmation. One person summed up the general feelings around the cancellation when they wrote,
"This is just awful news," following the heartbreaking announcement.
Patti Lupone confirms no Season 2 for Agatha All Along, and fans are taking to Twitter with hilarious reactions
The statement, of course, caused a flurry of emotional (and humourous) responses on the internet, with Twitter turning into a battlefield for fans' emotions. A lot of users were upset, confused, and lowkey crying while making jokes about the decision to cancel the second season.
One fan tweeted in disbelief,
“do they not realize wanda is their most popular character rn,” pointing out the ongoing popularity of Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch.
For many, the decision to forgo another season seems baffling, especially given how pivotal Wanda Maximoff was in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Another tweet called out Schaeffer’s reasoning for not continuing the show,
“That’s the worst reasoning I’ve ever heard,” paired with a meme of a man making a timeout sign.
Fans aren't taking the "too much to write" excuse lightly, and the meme game is, of course, strong.
Then there’s always someone ready to take matters into their own hands. One fan hilariously tweeted,
“Say less I’ll get it handled—” alongside a GIF of Kris Jenner wielding a gun, suggesting they’d ‘convince’ Schaeffer to reconsider.
Another frustrated fan simply posted,
“too much to write? 😭,” adding to the disbelief that a wealth of material in the WandaVision universe could be left untouched.
And finally, the dramatic cherry on top:
“this has to be a nightmare.”
The emotional whiplash is real, and fans are not ready to accept the end of Agatha Harkness’s wicked reign.
Background on the show’s abrupt end
A deeper dissatisfaction with the way WandaVision and its magical offshoot ended lurks behind the so-so hilarious fan replies. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer was steadfast in her conviction that WandaVision didn't need a second season, even in the face of the series' enormous success. Why? She thought the story had already been satisfactorily resolved. It's also important to note that Schaeffer turned down a request to write a second season for WandaVision, stating she was prepared to focus on other projects (much to the fans' disappointment).
Despite Marvel's reputation for having a super vast, linked universe, certain tales seem to be falling behind, even if fans are seriously asking for more. The studio may have decided against exploring a second season of Agatha All Along because it wants to continue branching out into new areas rather than re-exploring already explored ones. However, considering how much promise Agatha's character appeared to have, supporters are understandably, pretty disappointed.
