The Last of Us Season 2 is officially set to drop in April 2025. You can go ahead and start clearing your schedule because HBO announced this at CES.
After the first season had everyone crying harder than a cat meme on X, it only makes sense that they'd go full throttle with this next chapter in the post-apocalyptic saga.
Season 2 will take place five years later from the events of the first season. Therein, Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) attempted to survive a world ravaged half overrun with infected people and half filled with the savage.
Now, some of the fans are already getting heated over the casting for season 2. It’s like the internet just can’t find something to roast, and this time, it’s Ellie.
If you’re on X (formerly known as Twitter), the discourse has been... a lot.
One person straight-up said, “...this could easily be stopped and recast.”
Another user hit us with the “holy shit! It’s worse than I expected 💀.”
Some fans even called it “one of the worst casting decisions of the decade.”
And let’s not forget the crowd saying:
"They should’ve recasted for S2 my god this is terrible 🤦🏽♂️.”
Meanwhile, one enlightened soul suggested they cast Cailee Spaeny, who, apparently, “was right there too.”
A user added: "Not her fault but my god they needed recast this season man."
The Last of Us Season 2
So, while everyone’s busy roasting, season 2 is set to drop in April 2025, likely on April 6 or 13. HBO will probably try to sneak it in after The White Lotus finishes airing.
Season 2 will comprise 7 episodes—two fewer than the initial season.
Recently, a tantalizing trailer was released. It is safe to say the mood has certainly shifted. Where season 1 had plenty of emotional gut punches, this next season is heading straight for the jugular with some heavy zombie encounters and emotional turmoil that will probably have you screaming into a pillow. No cap.
And then there’s Abby...
So, you know the game, right? The storyline is going to follow The Last of Us Part II, which means we’re diving into some seriously messy stuff.
Abby is the character who left gamers in shambles, trying to figure out if they should love her, hate her, or cry about it. Abby’s played by Kaitlyn Dever, and trust us, this storyline is gonna be a rollercoaster.
Neil Druckmann, the co-creator of the series, is feeling blessed about all the love Season 1 got, and he's hyped to keep the party going. He told Tom’s Guide:
"I’m so grateful to Neil Druckmann and HBO for our partnership, and I’m even more grateful to the millions of people who have joined us on this journey. The audience has given us the chance to continue, and as a fan of the characters and world Neil and Naughty Dog created, I couldn’t be more ready to dive back in."

The internet has been buzzing about season 2, wondering how the show will adapt all the iconic moments from The Last of Us Part II. It's like gamers are on high alert, waiting to see if the emotional rollercoaster will match the intensity of the source material.
