Mittens the cat deserves a documentary!
Taking three consecutive flights in 24 hours can be exhausting even for the most enthusiastic travelers. The Maine coon is a survivor! Here's the fascinating story of a cat called Mittens who commuted thrice between Australia and New Zealand in a day.
So, what happened to Mittens?
On January 13th, Margos Neas boarded a flight from Christchurch, New Zealand, headed to Melbourne, Australia with her pet cat. Mittens' cage was placed carefully in the baggage section behind a wheelchair. The flight landed at Melbourne airport and the staff unloaded passengers' baggage, including Margos.' However, an important piece of luggage was left behind.
How did the cat end up traveling thrice?
Margos panicked and immediately reported to the airport ground staff about her cat being left behind. She was assured that they would look into the matter soon enough! She waited for three hours before being updated on the whereabouts of the cat and it didn't look good. They had messed up big time.
The officials informed her that the flight Mittens was on, had already left the airport and was en route to New Zealand again! However, they had asked the crew members to turn on the heating systems for the cargo so that Mittens could stay warm during the travel.
The airline staff have claimed that they don't accept direct bookings from passengers, hence Margos contacted the pet moving services that helped her move the cat from Christchurch to Melbourne. They made the needful arrangements to move Mittens back to Melbourne once again.
Margos Neas opened up about the incident and her interaction with the ground staff to NBC,
"They said: 'Look, we have located your cat - but it's actually on the return flight to Christchurch...'
"And I said: 'When did you discover that the cat wasn't taken off the plane?' And they said: 'We've only just discovered now.' And I said: 'How can this happen?'"
The ground staff tried to come up with possible reasons to justify the mishap. They claimed that it might have been due to the placement of the cage behind the wheelchair leading to the chaos.
On a brighter note, Mittens completed a three-way and returned to its rightful owner after her little adventure.
When I finally got her, she ran straight into my arms and snuggled up for the biggest cuddles ever. It was such a relief ~ Margos Neas informed the press.
The airline has apologized for the mishap and assured that they would reimburse the additional charges to the owner.
