Several memes have endured the test of time, including the "Why Not Both" or "Why Don't We Have Both" meme. This popular reaction meme, which features a little girl in a bob and fringe cut shrugging her shoulders and asking, "Why not both?" humorously captures the feeling of hesitation in not being able to choose one of any two options that one might be faced with, as well as the freedom of being able to select both if they want. The "Why Not Both" meme, which still holds up even after more than 15 years since it became viral, continues to be among the most iconic memes that have taken over the internet worldwide.

Origin of the "Why Not Both" meme

The famous image of the girl dates back to a Spanish-language commercial that aired in Sydney, Australia, in 2007 for El Paso Tacos. The commercial, which was for an at-home taco-making kit, showed two children debating over the quality and taste of a soft shell taco v/s a hard shell taco. As the two keep arguing, the camera pans to the little girl, who shrugs and says, "Por que no los dos?" which translates to "Why don't we have both?" and finally settles the debate.

A few years later, a fan page was created on Facebook in 2010 dedicated to Mia Agraviador, who played the little girl in the commercial. Memes featuring Mia uttering the phrase slowly started getting posted on the fan page. By 2011, it became a viral reaction meme being posted and shared across social media platforms and meme websites.

The "Why Not Both" meme immediately became a memer's favorite on the internet, as the very visual of an innocent little girl providing a solution to two difficult choices, sometimes made extremely dark or controversial, made for a hilarious juxtaposition in a viewer's eyes. It remains a popular meme to this day because of this juxtaposition.

What is the little girl from the meme up to now?

Mia Agraviador, who was just 6 years old when she starred in the commercial and became a viral meme for years that followed, is now 23 and all grown up. The girl nicknamed 'The El Paso Taco Girl' and 'The Why Not Both Girl' lives in Sydney, Australia, and works for a Sports Company. On being asked about her thoughts on her viral "Why Not Both" meme, she said she still remembers shooting for the commercial all those years back and gets asked to say her famous line by people who recognize her even now.

β€œIt’s always so surreal when I’m out and about with friends and family, at lunch or the shops, and we hear people ask β€˜por quΓ© no los dos’ when deciding between two things. It’s really become a national catchphrase,” said Agraviador.

As mentioned in her Instagram profile, she enjoys art, dancing, and fashion. She recently recreated her famous commercial scene with her iconic catchphrase more than 15 years after it first aired, leaving viewers nostalgic.
