The Rock is actually starring in a Martin Scorsese crime drama—like, for real. The guy who made a whole career out of raising an eyebrow and body-slamming fools is going to be out here monologuing in a mafia movie.
And if that wasn't crazy enough, Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt are also part of this crossover. Not only acting—they're co-producing with The Rock and Scorsese himself.
This could be the most bonkers Hollywood team-up ever. Taking to X, the actor announced:
“Grateful for what’s been the most creatively inspiring time of my career - working closely with my friends and of course, the maestro Marty Scorsese.”
Fans lost all cool, inundating social media with memes over the most unlikely on-screen pairing of all time.
Imagining The Rock in a Scorsese movie—a world of dark gangsters, Shakespearean treachery, and prolonged, intense stares—had everyone in stitches.
A user (@khaliltooshort) joked:
"They’re trying so hard to make him seem like an actual actor."
This could be Scorsese's biggest test so far.
A user (@sjfostersound) asked in disbelief:
"Was this movie a reason that Scorsese’s Sinatra biopic and Jesus movie got delayed?"
Just think about having to explain to somebody in 2019 that The Rock would hold up a Scorsese Jesus movie.
A user (@GeminiJack11) humorously mentioned:
"Curious how long this lasts until Scorsese gets annoyed with The Rock when he figures out Dwayne can't act, he just acts like The Rock."
By the third take, Marty will be wondering if he ever should have picked up a camera.
A user (@joeatreides1) went on to say:
"Thought this was a fake tweet for a second lol."
This is like an SNL sketch that ran amok.
A user (@JoestarJoyce) commented:
"Im really hoping that Scorsese can turn The Rock into a real actor. But im really can't hold myself when i see the pic from Red One😂"
If Scorsese makes this work, it's his most cinematic masterpiece.
One user (@Leotas_) quipped:
"Can’t wait to see him play the same character again for the 100th time with super strength."
His "range" is simply alternate clothing but the same personality.
The Rock confirms lead role in Martin Scorsese's Hawaiian mob movie
The actor made the announcement on X:
“In the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s the mafia controlled New York, Miami, Chicago, Vegas, and a particularly strong hold on the island I was raised - Hawaii. Much more to come.”
The Rock in a Martin Scorsese crime film could be the wildest crossover.
This as-yet-untitled movie is essentially Goodfellas x The Departed, but with a Hawaiian flair. It takes place in the vibes-but-violent days of 1960s-70s Hawaii and centers on a mob kingpin, Rock, making his way to the top—hustling against other gangs, corrupt mainland corporations, and anyone giving his traditional lands lip.
The cherry on top: it's all true.
Interestingly, the Jungle Cruise star duo, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, sold this to Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio themselves—i.e., a straight-up elevator pitch kind of thing—and, well, it really worked.
All four of them are now co-producing this big crime epic together.
In the meantime, the internet is just trying to wrap its head around the notion that the Jumanji star is going to drop a slow-burn, Scorsese-level monologue in place of body-slamming his foes through a table.
As per Beach Grit, the movie has a $200 million budget, and the screenplay is being written by Nick Bilton.
