Senator John Fetterman pulled up to Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20, 2025, like it was any other day—except it wasn’t. This was a historic moment, with Trump stepping back into the spotlight, and Washington, D.C., freezing over in more ways than one.
Temperatures hovered in the low 20s, and most folks had bundled up but not Fetterman.
While everyone else was decked out in formal wear— tuxedos, tailored suits, and ball gowns—Fetterman sauntered in rocking his signature look: a black hoodie, gray athletic shorts, and sneakers.
As expected, the internet exploded. X (formerly Twitter) lit up with reactions, ranging from the amused to the bewildered.
One user quipped: “The Angus Young of Congress. I'm so proud.”
A user humorously noted: “Man can somebody get this man a suit for these type of occasions 😭”
Another added: “That’s his signature outfit. He’d look odd without them.”
A user highlighted: “The man is consistent. Consistently underdressed. But consistent.”
Meanwhile, a user mentioned: “A dark hoodie = formal attire for Fetterman.”
A user quipped: “Why do I keep liking him more and more? He dresses like a slob and can hardly talk but he is growing on me. Kind of like a rash I guess.”
An ironical comment read: “Nice to see Fetterman interrupt his Pilates to attend the inauguration.”
“Forever dressed like he’s either on a Starbucks run for his wife or headed to the gym”, a comment read.
John Fetterman at Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony
The New York Post noted that Fetterman’s laid-back ensemble is his “traditional fashion style.” Meanwhile, everyone else at the inauguration adhered to formal dress codes.
During the ceremony, Fetterman relaxed in the front row, his legs casually stretched out as dignitaries streamed into the US Capitol. Despite the bitter cold that forced the event indoors, Fetterman remained steadfast in his signature casual attire.
CBS reporter Scott MacFarlane captured the moment with a photo of Fetterman arriving at the Capitol on Monday. MacFarlane wrote on X:
“Wind chill in the teens… as Sen John Fetterman (D-PA) arrives at Capitol in shorts”.
This isn’t the first time Fetterman has defied conventional dress codes. He previously turned heads by sporting a tuxedo hoodie at formal events, including the White House Correspondents' Association dinner.
Why was Trump’s inauguration ceremony held indoors?
Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration was a chill affair. We're talking "dangerously cold temperatures" in Washington D.C. So, naturally, Trump decided that the ceremony needed a change of venue.
This was done on January 17, 2025—just a couple of days before the big day. On Truth Social, Trump posted:
“I have ordered the Inauguration Address, in addition to prayers and other speeches, to be delivered in the United States Capitol Rotunda, as was used by Ronald Reagan in 1985, also because of very cold weather.”
“We will open Capital One Arena on Monday for LIVE viewing of this Historic event, and to host the Presidential Parade. I will join the crowd at Capital One, after my Swearing In.”
The move indoors significantly reduced the number of people who could attend in person, as the Capitol Rotunda has a much smaller capacity compared to the outdoor space typically used for inaugurations.
Initially, thousands of people were expected to attend, but as per CNN, the Capitol Rotunda has a capacity of around 700 people.
