In October 2019, English footballer Curtis Jones won the Carabao Cup quarter-finals against Arsenal at Anfield Stadium in Liverpool, England. The crowd went berserk over his memorable win.

Moments after the match one member of the football club’s media team requested Jones to send a message for his fans. Since he didn’t have much experience with the media earlier, he said exactly the same thing that was told to him.

“Let me tell you exactly what happened there,” Curtis told Liverpool FC in an interview. “Before I was media trained, somebody has come with a phone and said, ‘Is there any way you can give the fans a little message?’ Yeah, of course,” he said.

He further explained that ever since then the clip has been used multiple times and “the rest is history.” It was a light-hearted moment for him as embraced his newfound status within Liverpool FC.

“She is the one who reminds me of who I actually am. We’ve always had a bond,” beams Curtis sharing his mom’s views.

“It was her who did all my footballing stuff, the taxis there and back, the times when it was freezing cold outside in the rain and stuff, it was always her. The Mossley Hill days.”

He went on to tell how he always dreamt of gifting his mom a big house and nice cars.

“My goal as a kid was always to have my mum in a big house and the nice cars, but that’s not what she wants. If she’s comfortable then it makes me happy.”

That was how Curtis Jones became a meme as the clip was widely circulated. It is not that every day someone becomes a viral sensation because of a meme. Jones’ memorable win resonated with the fans who etched it forever in their hearts. It’s been five years and still, fans can relate to it.
