Sydney Sweeney is set to star and produce a film titled I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl at Warner Bros, per Deadline. The film will follow a Reddit story written by Joe Cote. The upcoming psychological thriller will be produced under the banner of actors production house Fifty-Fifty Films.

According to Deadline, the plot revolves around a girl who finds a family mourning for their missing daughter. Rather than assisting them, she exploits their sorrow for herself, manipulating their feelings and resources. She soon finds out, though, that she has made a terrible mistake.

The script is being adapted to screen by Eric Roth who is the mastermind of successful movies such as Forrest Gump and Dune.

Though the movie's premise seems promising, social media users are laughing hysterically at the fact that we are now producing movies based on Reddit stories.

Certain users teased, joking that this was probably her first time making a movie, naturally a sarcastic remark. While a group of users made funny remarks on how they were going to watch the movie for the plot with the plot being Sydney Sweeney herself.

Social media reacts to Sydney Sweeney's upcoming psychological thriller

Fans are finding it hard to accept that the film is indeed inspired by a Reddit story. Social media is filled with comedic reactions, with people asking where originality went in filmmaking. Some even posted memes to encapsulate their disbelief better than words.

A user @thefilmstans commented:

"We making movies on reddit threads and short stories now 😭"

Another user @M0SD3V said:

"Ok I change my mind let AI win."

A user @tinakilberg went on to say, in part:

"Lurking Reddit for story inspiration? What happened to creativity."

One user shared a meme depicting their emotions about the announcement.

HBO managed to catch strays, with people jokingly saying this film sounds more terrifying than Sydney Sweeney's role in Euphoria. While others humorously confessed they would watch it solely because her name is attached to it.

Another user @debayo_xx poked fun saying:

"Love that she’s taking on roles that truly terrify, this one’s scarier than being in an HBO contract."

A user @Fight_Club_Lad hilariously stated:

"Sign me up. She can pretend to be a missing girl and I will pretend to watch the film for the plot."

One more user @english_shamar humorously mentioned:

"You had me at Sydney Sweeney."

A user had a hilarious theory that perhaps someone at Deadline misinterpreted Sydney Sweeney's interview. They pictured her saying something about faking being a missing girl, and the reporter interpreted it as the real plot of the movie.

Another user boldly asserted they could already forecast the whole plot.

A user @dontcallmeraylo thinks:

"Betting someone at Deadline asked her about the role she just got done shooting and she said "I PRETENDED TO BE A MISSING GIRL" and they misunderstood what she meant."

Another user @mycuzzinvinni predicted the whole plot saying:

"So basically the parents killed their daughter and claimed she went missing. And now they have to pretend she is really alive and somehow Sweeney uncovers the truth. Thanks for ruining the movie!"

Notably, this isn't the first time that Sydney Sweeney is producing a film. She produced and acted in Anyone But You, which subsequently earned approximately $220 million globally.

Meanwhile, her new project came from a tale shared on Reddit's r/nosleep forum, which became an online sensation.
