Steven Yeun is on a generational run of late, and adding another feather to his long list of accomplishments is the announcement that he has been cast in the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender animated sequel movie. Steven has already made waves in the Avatar universe when he voiced Wan, the first Avatar, in The Legend of Korra.

After a long hiatus, he now returns to reprise his role in the Avatarverse, although the details of the casting have still been kept under wraps.

Fans react hilariously as Steven Yeun joins Avatar: The Last Airbender cast

Steven Yeun already has a prior association with the Avatar franchise and it's only fitting that he comes back to the beloved franchise. The man has made careers out of playing deeply relatable yet slightly unhinged characters and now he is ready to lend his voice to the whimsical world of elemental bending.

The announcement itself was made with a minimum of fuss, but the excitement that it has built up within the fanbase is nothing short of monumental. Within minutes of the news breaking, fans went spiraling into a hilarious mix of euphoria, confusion, and meme-fueled chaos as Steven's body of work was inevitably brought into the conversation:

"If he’s Invisible, why can’t we see him?" joked one fan (via X / @Culture3ase)
"Where did Levy send Mark now?" quipped another (via X / @NotQuash)

The reactions to the announcement implied that the fans could hardly believe the surprising nature of the collab as they questioned if Angstrom Levy had sent Invincible flying to another dimension.

Of course, Walking Dead fans were also left not far behind as they scratched their heads in unison with the others. It's a running joke that Glenn from The Walking Dead has still not gotten his comeuppance against Negan for bashing his skull into the ground, and fans have been baying for blood ever since. Invariably, there were also shouts for Jeffrey Dean Morgan to be cast in the upcoming sequel:

The excitement surrounding Steven Yeun's casting is palpable and fans have been frantically trying to decode his role in the upcoming movie. The reactions to his casting ranged from ecstatic to hilariously skeptical as netizens had a field day on X:

"Steven Yeun joining the Avatar universe? This cast is bending expectations in all the right ways. 2026 can’t come fast enough!" commented one enthusiastic fan (via X / @TheRealJaunzsen)

Avatar: The Last Airbender is already running late on schedule as it was supposed to have been released in 2025 itself. The delay in the release of the movie has certainly angered fans and they voiced their concerns to the creators:

"You got the date wrong. That doesn’t say 2055", quipped another (via X / @one_big_boss)

As speculation ran rife about what role Yeun would play in the upcoming sequel, one fan (@moazzumjillani) hilariously mistook the announcement as Steven joining the Avengers band:

"Thought it was another casting for the avengers movie" jested the fan.

Marvel played the musical chairs game for so long that speculation got out of control - with Steven Yeun, Homelander, and even The Monkey rumored to join the Avengers. As someone who already has prior experience of punching aliens in the face, Steven would fight right in with the Avengers and wouldn't look out of place at all!

As hilarious as all this speculation is, there’s no denying that adding Steven Yeun to the mix has elevated the hype train regarding the movie. Whether he’ll end up being a friend, foe, or morally ambiguous wildcard remains to be seen but Steven has certainly got the range in his arsenal to pull it off.

His casting is also a testament to how far he has come in a short period of time and we couldn't be more excited to see him spitting those witty barbs at his enemies.
