SpongeBob SquarePants is going where no sponge has gone before: the underworld. Yes, you read that right. The upcoming film, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, promises to take Bikini Bottom’s most absorbent resident on a deep dive into the unknown.

Nickelodeon has given us multiple SpongeBob movies over the years, but this one? It’s raising eyebrows. Some fans are excited. Others? They just want their classic SpongeBob episodes back. Either way, social media has turned into a comedy club, with reactions that are arguably funnier than anything in SpongeBob’s own universe.

The SpongeBob Movie Takes a Dark Turn Literally

The moment people heard that SpongeBob was heading to the underworld, chaos broke out online. Why is he going there? Who’s sending him? Is Bikini Bottom not dramatic enough? These are the big questions.

Nickelodeon hasn’t dropped too many details yet, but that hasn’t stopped fans from going wild. Some think the plot sounds ridiculous. Others think it’s genius. Either way, the post announcing the movie went viral faster than SpongeBob can flip a Krabby Patty.

Reactions range from confusion to excitement to flat-out roast sessions. One user kept it simple, summing up what most people were thinking:

"That’s weird."

Well, yes. A talking sponge heading to the underworld isn’t exactly an everyday event. But then again, this is the same franchise that gave us a squirrel in a spacesuit and a grumpy octopus with a clarinet addiction.

Another fan had zero interest in the cinematic journey and made their priorities clear:

"We don’t need SpongeBob movies lol just give us good episodes."

Fair point. For some, nothing beats classic SpongeBob: the absurd humor, the iconic one-liners, and the golden-era episodes that still live rent-free in our heads.

Then there are those who are completely on board with whatever Bikini Bottoms throws at them. A fan excitedly declared:

"Yes, MORE SpongeBob, please."

We see you. Some people just want to soak up every ounce of SpongeBob content they can get.

But then, of course, there’s the classic SpongeBob logic applied to the situation. Someone pointed out:

"He probably just chillin at Patrick’s under his rock."

Look, it’s not the worst theory. Maybe the underworld is just a really well-decorated basement.

And, of course, the 2004 movie purists had to make their voices heard. One person stated:

"We’ll see, but nothing beats the 2004 OG movie."

Honestly? Fair. That movie had David Hasselhoff. Tough competition.

Then there’s that one fan who, despite all the skepticism, is already committed to watching it in theaters:

"Me on my way to the theatres for this one."

We respect the dedication. Some things you just have to witness for yourself.

At the end of the day, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants is happening whether fans love it or not. Will it be a masterpiece? A total disaster? Just another excuse to keep SpongeBob’s legacy alive? Who knows.

But one thing is certain: this little sponge still knows how to get people talking.
