Kitao Sakurai is set to direct the upcoming Street Fighter movie, which is set to hit theaters on March 20, 2026. Best known for his work on The Eric Andre Show and Bad Trip, Sakurai has a knack for chaotic humor and unconventional storytelling.

But as soon as the news dropped, fans had… thoughts, some REALLY loud thoughts. While some were excited, others immediately took to the internet to crack jokes, express skepticism, and [of course!] make references to the 1994 Street Fighter film, that it can even make anyone nostalgic.

Street Fighter Movie Announcement Sparks Online Frenzy

One comment in particular stole the show. “Shoulda been RackaRacka,” a fan posted, referring to the Australian YouTube duo famous for their wild, stunt-filled fight scenes. The hilarity of this single line set off a chain of funny reactions on the internet.

Many felt RackaRacka would’ve been a perfect choice given their high-energy, over-the-top action style. Others just loved the irony of it all Street Fighter movies have a history of questionable creative decisions, so why not throw in some chaos in the blend as well? Quite hilarious, right?!

Before long, the post went viral, turning a simple casting announcement into a full-blown internet frenzy.

Of course, the rest of the internet had plenty to say. The most common reaction? Doubt. “It’s impossible to make a good live-action Street Fighter,” one fan wrote, summing up decades of disappointment. Considering the franchise's previous attempts, it’s hard to argue.

Another fan chimed in with, “Crazy nostalgia!” While some are wary, others are just happy to see Street Fighter back in the spotlight. Even if it turns out to be a trainwreck, it’ll at least bring back some memories.

Then there were the die-hard 90s fans. “If Kylie Minogue and Jean-Claude Van Damme aren’t in it, I don’t want it.” It’s a ridiculous demand, but also completely understandable. The 1994 Street Fighter movie might not have been good, but it was memorable, and for some, that’s enough.

“The last one was already ‘good’ enough,” another fan joked, a clear nod to the original film’s so-bad-it’s-good reputation. It’s got cheesy one-liners, bizarre fight choreography, and Raul Julia performing of a lifetime as M. Bison. What more do you need?

And, of course, the internet’s most universal plea: “Please don’t be trash.” It’s a simple request, but given the history of video game adaptations, it might be asking for too much.

Whether Sakurai’s Street Fighter turns out to be a surprise hit or another addition to the “so bad it’s funny” Hall of Fame, one thing is certain it’s going to get people talking.

Fans might not all agree on whether this is a good idea, but at least the reactions are entertaining. And in the end, that’s what Street Fighter movies do best: bring people together, whether it’s for epic fights… or epic roasts.
