Riverdale –– the show that went from small-town teen drama to full-on superhero saga. If you’ve been MIA and just now tuning in, brace yourself. What started as a classic whodunit morphed into a wild ride where our favorite characters got superpowers. Yeah, superpowers.

The OG Riverdale had us all hooked with its moody lighting, mysterious deaths, and high school angst. But somewhere along the way, the writers decided, Nah, let’s give them some spice. Now, we’ve got Cheryl Blossom shooting fire from her hands, Archie turning into the Hulk, and Betty seeing evil auras.

It’s like the writers threw the comics and every genre they could think of into a blender, and this is the smoothie we got.

The fanbase is split. On one hand, we have the stans who were vibing with this new energy. Cheryl's pyrokinesis and Madelaine Petsch’s portrayal of Cheryl during her fiery transformation –– iconic.

On the other side, some viewers are watching with their eyebrows permanently raised. The roast game is strong, with fans lovingly dragging the show for its leap from relatable teen drama to what is happening?

An X (formerly Twitter) user aptly put it stating,

“Riverdale was soooo good until it wasn’t. Like why did they get powers?”
A user humorously noted: "They started freestyling after season 2."
Another user said: "Yes they blew me why tf is season 4-5 about aliens and sh*t and season 6 about witchcraft they lost me heavily."
Meanwhile, a user said: "Like u guys were normal teenagers…wtf happened 😭😭😭"
Another user highlighted: "Swear they had a musical episode too like?? we lost the plot 😭😭 that was my show too."
A comment read: "Wasn't this a show about teen relationship drama and making the football team?"
"Why did they start singing????" another comment read.
"It was never good, y'all just grew up", a user stated.
A user's comment read: "Riverdale really said, 'Let’s see how far we can push this."

The superpower saga in Riverdale

Let’s break down these superpowers real quick. Cheryl Blossom got pyrokinesis. She was out here burning stuff with her mind like a fiery queen.

Archie? Our boy has super strength and invulnerability, making him a red-headed Superman minus the cape.

Betty’s got the ability to see evil auras, turning her into a human lie detector.

Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa claims these powers are just extensions of the character's traits.

In short, they’ve been low-key superheroes all along.

And it was all gearing up for an epic showdown with big bad Percival Pickins, who was about to get the super-smackdown of the century.

From murder mystery to mayhem

The switch from teen drama to supernatural showdown has folks reminiscing about the good ol’ days when the biggest drama was a love triangle and a mysterious murder.

Now, we’ve got magic, supervillains, and a plot that sometimes feels like it’s doing the most.

So, what’s next? Flying serpents? Time travel? Honestly, who knows?
