In what was an announcement of monumental proportions, it has just been revealed that legendary actor Sir Patrick Stewart would be making a comeback as Professor X in Avengers: Doomsday, tentatively scheduled to release in May 2026. His casting rounded up what was already a stellar cast assembled by Marvel to take on the formidable King of Latveria, Dr. Doom. The news of Professor X joining the Avengers took fans by surprise, considering the number of times the character has already died in the Marvel universe.
Professor X's return to the Marvel Universe leaves fans in stitches
Officially, Charles Xavier, aka Professor X, has died three times since his introduction in the X-Men franchise. But if we count the number of times it was implied that he met his end or simply rode off into the sunset, the numbers stop making sense! So when the news dropped of Professor X making a comeback to the big screen, it left fans wondering if the guy really has nine cat lives after all.
It seems like whatever calamity may befall him, Professor X always finds his way back, almost like a mutant! The news has left the fans scratching their heads in confusion, and many have come up with theories and analogies of their own to make up for the lapse in logic:
"Mf a frequent flyer to the afterlife", joked one fan (via X / @kite_yagami)
"Are sure professor X isn’t actually just a Deadpool variant at this point", wondered another (via X / @ImportanP)
"He's Kenny of Marvel Universe", quipped another fan, drawing parallels to the ultimate cockroach of South Park, Kenny (via X / @TUBastich)
Professor X's stubborn refusal to stay in the grave has to be commended —Avengers needed a wildcard entry, and out he comes, rolling back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe like he’s got a lifetime warranty.
This begs the question: how does he keep doing it? Fans on social media had a jolly good time debating over his superpower. Some wondered if he was just a telepath who had mastered the art of resurrection while others argued for the possibility where he might have just uploaded his consciousness into someone or somewhere else. Another bunch of fans wondered if he was secretly a Skrull who is really bad at impersonating bald guys.
Whatever the might be the reason behind his regeneration and resurrection superpowers, some loyal fans still found themselves to be delightfully surprised by the news and shared their sentiments on social media, all the while poking fun at the absurdity of it all:
"Give that man a loyalty card at this point", teased one fan (via X / @SirTopiano)
"If I had a nickel for every time I’ve seen Patrick Stewart’s Professor X get killed on screen, I’d have theee nickels, which isn’t alot but it’s stupid that it’s happened that many times", remarked another (via X / @Matthew08502981)
It is hilarious to think that whenever Marvel thought that they needed a sacrificial lamb to keep the suspense going, they thought Charles Xavier would be the perfect option. We've lost track of the number of times this has already happened. At this point, it seems like he should come with a warning label reading 'Fragile - Handle With Care.'
Nevertheless, Marvel has perhaps truly cracked the code when it comes to explaining absurd plots. Our money is on multiverse nonsense — whenever in doubt, Marvel loves to slap the 'multiverse' logic on the plot and calls it a day. Amid the online mayhem on X revolving around the announcement of Professor X's, one fan even went to the lengths of compiling a list of all the times Charles Xavier has died in the MCU:
Bro has “died” on literally every movie he is in X-Men: killed as soon as he turns Cerebro on in the 3rd act. X2: killed by mindbrainwashing guy. The Last Stand: blown to smithereens by Jean Grey. Days of Future Past: killed by sentinels. Logan: stabbed. DS MoM: killed by wanda" explained the fan (via X / @acribli)
To this, another fan replied:
"Even further than that. Star Trek Picard: Actually f*** dies and get replaced with a synthetic body", remarked the fan (via X / @NaoTheLocalViet)
However, after watching Charles Xavier die three times already in various movies, it has reached a point where it doesn't seem funny anymore. However, one fan commented on what would make Professor X's upcoming appearance in Avengers: Doomsday truly memorable:
"Maybe they'll kill him again. that could be pretty funny", joked the fan (via X / @staidindoors)
Okay, we change our minds. That would still be pretty funny.
Alongside Professor X, we’ll also see familiar faces like Magneto and other beloved characters from both the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises in Avengers: Doomsday. We can't wait to see what the supervillain might have in store, especially considering the Avengers had to resurrect and summon a dead guy just to stand a chance against the former.
No matter how it does at the box office, Avengers: Doomsday is set up to be a reunion for the ages, and hopefully, Professor X can finally catch a break. After everything he has endured, he deserves at least a few centuries of peace!
