The Oscars will be introducing a new award for stunt work. Titled Achievement in Stunt Design, the award will officially become part of the 100th Academy Awards in 2028, for films released in 2027.
The CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Bill Kramer, and Academy president Janet Yang were quoted by Variety as saying:
"Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking."
"We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and dedication in reaching this momentous occasion."
The initiative is said to be spearheaded by director David Leitch in the interest of the stunt community. He was cited as saying by the news agency:
“This has been a long journey for so many of us. Chris O’Hara and I have spent years working to bring this moment to life, standing on the shoulders of the stunt professionals who’ve fought tirelessly for recognition over the decades. We are incredibly grateful. Thank you, Academy.”
Following this announcement, social media was taken by storm with users flooding the internet with Tom Cruise jokes. FYI, the Mission Impossible star is well-known for doing his own stunts.
Tom Cruise is reportedly going to end his time with the franchise with the upcoming movie, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, out on May 23, 2025. After all these years of executing his own thrill-inducing stunts, the Academy decides to reward them once he is through with it!
Meanwhile, some even mentioned how Jackie Chan would have swept them all in his prime. Others jokingly mention it is definitely Ryan Gosling's doing.
However, the consensus online is that the Academy likely doesn't want to award Tom Cruise his well-deserved Oscar.
Tom Cruise jokes take over as the Oscars announce a Best Stunts category for 2027
Fans believe the Oscars pulled a fast one on Tom Cruise! After he's retired from the Mission: Impossible series, the Academy finally brings a stunt category that he would've won every. single. year.
People claim he's at least entitled to an honorary award, but others are already making jokes that the Academy has beef with him and timed this accordingly.
One user, @BigScreenBerkan, pointed out:
"No shot yall are gonna introduce this a YEAR after Tom Cruise says goodbye to Mission Impossible. That's cruel."
User @be_bloo suggested:
"They should give a Honorary Stunt Oscar to Tom Cruise for everything before then🗿."
A user @JonathanGuito stated:
"They really don't want to give Tom Cruise an Oscar."
Some fans believe Jackie Chan is the most deserving of this award—joking that he may be staring at this news today with a few broken bones. Many feel he should receive a lifetime honorary award for his legendary stunt performances.
One user commented:
"Jackie Chan watching this with 17 broken bones and a smile."
A user @NSilverwind opined:
"If this was around when Jackie Chan was in his prime, he would have swept it up every year."
A user declared:
"There better be a back log for him!"
Some fans are supporting Ryan Gosling, saying he most definitely deserves to win an award after The Fall Guy. Now, he's being added to the list of actors who were snubbed by the Academy.
Fans are roasting the Oscars, claiming it is wrong to introduce this category after all these years.
A user @ThomasRamos303 said:
"If only the Fall Guy had come out a few years later."
Another user @Techny3000 commented:
"After Tom Cruise's prime and Ryan Gosling's fall guy, this feels wrong."
A user @psychegaze suggested:
"Brah. We gotta delay mission impossible 😭 tom cruise deserve this award sm."
The last new Oscar category added prior to this was Achievement in Casting, which will make its debut at the 98th Academy Awards in 2026.
