Diane Warren just extended her record– the most Oscar losses in the Best Original Song category. At the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, 2025, she went in with her 16th nomination for The Journey from The Six Triple Eight—and walked out with, well, just the memories. Again.
This time, Warren lost to the song El Mal from Emilia Pérez.
Diane Warren, an American songwriter, has crafted music for decades. From Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now in 1987 to I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing, her songs have featured in some of Hollywood’s biggest films.
But when it comes to Oscar night, The Academy shrugs and hands the trophy to someone else. Every. Single. Time.
While everyone feels for Warren, the internet just couldn’t resist roasting her situation. At this point, people are joking that they might as well create a whole separate award show just for her and hand over every trophy in existence.
One user joked:
"16 nominations and still no win? this is a villain origin story waiting to happen 😭"
One user shared a hilarious response:
"Academy awards when they see diane warren submit a song for the 16th time"
One user thinks that this is "Diane Warren right now"
A post read:
"when diane warren loses for the hundredth time"
Not withholding anything, a user said:
"When you ask Diane Warren how many Oscars she’s lost"
One more post read:
"diane warren every year"
"LMFAOOOOOOOOO diane warren never winning that oscar", one user wrote.
A user posted:
"diane warren when it comes to getting an oscar nomination but not winning" with a hilarious video.
Another user joked:
"Diane warren getting to relive her nightmare every year"
Diane Warren’s Oscar journey: A timeline of almost-wins
Sixteen nominations over nearly 40 years. Warren’s songs have been performed by industry titans—Celine Dion, Lady Gaga and Aerosmith.
And yet, not a single Oscar has made its way to her shelf.
This year’s entry, The Journey, had everything going for it: a moving performance by H.E.R., a film with critical acclaim, and, of course, Warren’s signature lyrical magic.
But as history has shown, the Academy wasn’t ready to change the script.
Although, in 2022, Warren was awarded with an Honorary Oscar, her multiple nominations have failed to transform into a win.
However, Warren is seemingly content as she once told the Associated Press,
“You win when you get nominated.”
Is the Academy just not into her music?

At this point, the conspiracy theories write themselves. Is Warren’s classic songwriting style too old-school for the Academy’s current tastes? Are her competitors just too strong?
Let’s not forget, last year she lost to Billie Eilish and Finneas for What Was I Made For? from Barbie, a song that took over pop culture.
Whatever the reason, Warren remains Hollywood’s go-to songwriter.
And, to be fair, being nominated 16 times is an achievement in itself.
Will she ever win? Place your bets now
Despite her Oscar losing streak, Warren isn’t slowing down.
If anything, she’s more determined than ever to keep churning out hits. In a conversation with TMZ last year, Warren mentioned that she will be back at the Oscars, nomination number 16 in hand, ready to break the streak.
But guess we will keep the same spirit alive for nomination number 17 to flip the tables.
Or, you know, extend it.
