Fede Álvarez has an idea. Speaking at an IMAX screening of Alien: Romulus hosted by Collider, the director laid out his plan for an Alien vs. Predator film. If Hollywood ever listened to a guy with a vision, this would be the moment.

Álvarez doesn’t want to give away the surprise in trailers or promotions. He wants it to be a secret. The Evil Dead director wants to drop you into a Predator movie, have you settle in, and then astonish you with Xenomorphs.

Or you sink deep into an Alien movie when abruptly a cloaked character emerges from the darkness. The distinctive clicking sound suddenly emerges and immediately signals the beginning of the game.

Meanwhile, social media was locked and loaded with jokes. One X user served a straightforward roast disguised as advice:

"Or make new aliens? There’s gotta be more out there if Xenos & Preds exist in the same universe. Make another cool unique alien species instead of rehashing the same things"

We’re lucky they even change the movie title.

A user stated:

"Well…. Not a secret anymore if we get another predator movie in the future. Thanks bro."

That was the worst surprise party planning ever.

A user reminded:

"None of the Alien vs Predator movies have been good 🙄"

The scariest thing in these movies is the reviews.

A user commented:

"Well you've given it away now buddy"

This is why we can’t have nice things.

One user joked:

"Just have to hide who the real director is, now."

If it flops, they’ll continue hiding the director.

A user went on to say:

"Well now we’d be on the lookout when the next Predator movie comes out"

Next Predator movie title: Totally NOT Alien vs Predator.

The potential for an Alien vs. Predator film

Álvarez explained how he might want to approach an Alien vs. Predator:

“The way I would do it, most likely, if it could be done this way… It’s harder to keep secrets online… The best AVP will be the one that you don’t know is AVP until the other guy shows up.”

He added -

“You think you’re watching a Predator movie, and then they land in some place and there are creatures, and fu*king hell, it’s a Xenomorph. That would get me. ‘Fu*k yeah!’ You’d go crazy.”
“Or vice versa, you’re in an Alien movie, and then suddenly a mysterious creature is there, and you can hear that sound, and you see the cloak, and you go, ‘Is that a fu*king Predator?’ And then turns out it is. That would be the way to do it, don’t you think? Once you put it in the title, it’s like, ‘Spoiler alert.’”

Challenges in modern marketing

Álvarez knows keeping a secret like this in the age of internet leaks is next to impossible.

And he's got a point. You can't even walk into a grocery store without seeing full plot breakdowns for movies that aren't out yet.

Despite this, he believes that with careful planning, it is still feasible to execute this concept effectively. He mentioned that when films are marketed with clear titles indicating their crossover nature, it often leads to spoilers that can diminish audience anticipation.

This isn't the first rodeo for Alien vs. Predator

The 2004 movie had its moments. Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, released in 2007, became one of the unfortunate milestones in movie history.

The entire Alien vs. Predator franchise operated under inconsistently unsuccessful conditions since its initial launch. The crossover film from 2004 generated average reception from critics, and the 2007 sequel faced both critical and commercial failure.

Recent successes of Prey and Alien: Romulus brought fresh interest to both film franchises.

Álvarez demonstrated positive sentiments about making another crossover film by declaring that sufficient fan and directorial interest could potentially turn it into reality.

The filmmaker expressed interest in working with Dan Trachtenberg, who directed Prey, as this collaboration may result in innovative methods to reestablish the AvP concept.

According to Álvarez, it is important to wait for the right time combined with a creative vision to pursue this project since he remains willing to explore it.
