One of the internet's favorite philanthropists and YouTube big shots, Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson, thought it would be a good idea to casually tweet something that would inevitably set X (formerly Twitter) on fire. Amid speculation of TikTok ban, he took to his handle to declare:

“Okay fine, I’ll buy TikTok so it doesn’t get banned”.

And just like that, over a million eyes shifted toward their screens. However, MrBeast hasn’t taken out his credit card just yet, but his playful tweet was enough to cause a flood of reactions.

The audiences, without skipping a beat, rushed to every nook and cranny of the internet to apply meme magic to it all. There were some who even proposed a tag-team effort with Elon Musk because why not?

A user (@greg16676935420) humorously commented:

"Mr Beast not to be that guy but it’s free in the App Store."
A user (@cryptoPal4) suggested: "Maybe he and Elon can team up."

Quoting the YouTuber's famous line, a user (@xmarksthespotbr) stated:

"I just bought TikTok and I'm giving it away to one lucky subscriber"
Another (@wedigja) hilariously suggested: "If you're a guy in your early 20s, buy TikTok. Go into debt if you have to."

A user went on to react with Jemima Kirke’s What the hell, sure meme:

Meanwhile, a user thinks: "It's only 14 January and so much has already happened this year 💀"
A comment (@OricorioWho) read: "they should sell it to me actually."

Is Mr. Beast actually buying TikTok?

While the internet would like to see an idea of a MrBeast saving TikTok, there is no actual acquisition plan at the moment. His tweet was a playful wink at all the turbulence regarding Tiktok’s operations in the U.S.

The top U.S. court has ruled that ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, will have to divest its operations in America before January 19, 2025, or risk being banned due to security concerns.

What’s otherwise a rather consequential event, MrBeast’s tweet was delivered right on the dot to bring some fun into it all.

Conspicuously beneath the MrBeast’s tweet, various debates and wild theories filled the grounds. Some media speculated that ByteDance may transfer ownership of TikTok to Musk’s X to evade the ban, but TikTok was very much ready with a dismissal stating in a tweet that the rumors were mere “pure fiction”.

Who is MrBeast?

If you are wondering what all the fuss is about with MrBeast, here is an ultra-condensed breakdown if you have managed to completely avoid this guy up to now. His real name is Jimmy Donaldson, and was born on May 7, 1998, in Wichita, Kansas, but he was raised in Greenville North Carolina.

His career on YouTube began when he was only 13 years old.

Known by the then-alias MrBeast6000, he first started uploading gameplays and commenting but he realized his true niche in epic challenges and giant giveaways.

Skip to the year 2024 and MrBeast is now the creator with the highest subscription on YouTube having beaten even T-Series with 340 million subscribers. Also, he has a net worth of approximately $500 million.

Meanwhile, the TikTok ban update

Now, let’s go back to the TikTok ban. The deadline that ByteDance has for divesting Tiktok’s US operations or face the app being pulled out of the United States is January 19, 2025.

All of this is because of the law that President Biden enacted in April 2024, which was supported by both Democrats and Republicans because of data privacy and misinformation.

The Supreme Court's recent hearings have cast an almost apocalyptic scenario for TikTok's presence in the United States. It seems that the justices would be interested in upholding the law, which would mean yanking the app from the app stores.

The existing users may continue to use it for some time, but without the updates, one can only wait before the application starts to fizzle out.

On January 19, you may wake up and open TikTok to find the message: "Sorry, this service is no longer available in the U.S.," something akin to when India banned the app.
