Vice President JD Vance dropped the Ohio State Buckeyes' championship trophy while presenting at a special event at the White House on April 14, 2025. The team was being celebrated for their win in the 2025 College Football Playoff National Championship.

As the team was taking a photo with President Donald Trump, JD Vance lifted the trophy up for photos. But the upper portion of the trophy, which is designed to be removable, slipped out of his hands.

It hit the ground, and then the bottom fell and rolled a little bit.

The crowd gasped and laughed nervously. Ohio State player TreVeyon Henderson immediately picked up the top portion, and Vance chased the bottom.

They reassembled the trophy with assistance from Henderson and coach Ryan Day.

Vance then cradled it once more, being more gentle, as the players laughed.

While the internet makes everything into a laugh-worthy moment, let alone the ones that are truly funny, the event sparked laughter on social media, with individuals making all kinds of jokes about it.

Netizens have been laughing at everything from jokes about how the trophy was ordered from Temu to claims that it was not intended for pickup.

Even JD Vance himself did not let the fun stop. In a playful remark, the vice president posted on his X account:

"I didn’t want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it."

JD Vance lifts Ohio State’s championship trophy… and breaks it, the internet loses it

A user joked that the trophy was likely from Temu. Others teased the moment by saying it clearly wasn't supposed to be picked up.

Some mentioned that the entire situation seemed even more awkward because the U.S. Marine Corps Band was playing Queen's We Are the Champions in the background as it unfolded.

A user @90ramco declared:

"Trophy from Temu."

Another user said:

"I don't think that 🏆 was supposed to be picked up."

A user @luanaxbelle hilariously noted:

"The music made it so much worse 😭😭😭"

A few users mocked the moment, while others joked about the MAGA campaign, referring to it as "make trophies sturdy again."

Many noted how JD Vance dropped the trophy as if it were a matter of no concern.

One user @findheavydav3 mentioned:

"Well that's awkward!"

A user @realastrocrypto highlighted:

"Bro dropped it like it was nothing 😭"

A user, @PootyBopper, jokingly stated:

"Make trophies sturdy again bro."

Social media users teased that he seemed to have never held a trophy in his life. Other people even introduced Sabrina Carpenter's Juno pose into the mix.

A user @Kar_mellow quipped:

"He’s never held a trophy before lmao."

Meanwhile, a user pointed out that all this is "Sabrina Carpenter Juno coded."

One user made fun of the situation, saying:

"Epic comedy gold."

Throughout the celebrations, JD Vance playfully joked around. He took aim at someone in the crowd wearing a University of Michigan baseball cap. FYI, the University of Michigan is Ohio State's arch-rival.

He joked that this individual was a "dangerous weapon." He instructed the Secret Service to mark him down.

JD Vance also teased a friendly bet with Senator Ted Cruz. This was over the last playoff matchup between Ohio State and the University of Texas.

At the same time, the Buckeyes were officially honored by President Trump. They were recognized for their championship-winning season, which concluded with a 34–23 victory against Notre Dame in January.
