Hamster & Gretel has been brought to a premature end on Disney+ after just 2 seasons and 50 episodes. Creator Dan Povenmire, the co-creator of Phineas and Ferb, also gave us Hamster & Gretel, which followed the adventures of Gretel and her energetic pet hamster. This news has sent fans spiraling into hysteria, with reactions ranging from complete despair to creative outbursts of humor.
Hilarious fan reactions to Hamster & Gretel's premature ending on Disney
Hamster & Gretel promised so much when it first premiered. After all, what's not to like in a show about a superpowered girl and her pet rodent putting on their capes and fighting crimes all over the city? Amid the fanfare, a new season 2 was announced and it promised to build on the solid foundations of the first season.
But as the show met its untimely end, it led many to speculate about the reasons behind this choice. Many fans cited low ratings or creative exhaustion as the reason, arguing that there are only so many hamster puns you can come up with before the hamsters come home to roost...or whatever it is that they do.
Others wondered how the beloved show suddenly came to an end on Disney. Some fans leaned into the supernatural to explain the phenomenon, as they blamed Gravity Falls' Bill Cipher for casting his juju from his prison cell:
"Oh. Again. The curse of Bill Cipher", joked the fan (via X / @Vee_abstra).
When the news dropped on social media, many fans flocked to social media to express their disappointment with the creative decision. Many fans were upset at the rushed nature of the decision as Dan Povenmire, the creator of the show, reportedly had to tinker with the ending of the show to bring it in line with the studio's demands.
Fans poked fun at Disney, as many suggested that the aliens who gave Gretel and her hamster their powers must have also taken away Disney's common sense. One fan, in particular, was so angry that he let out a cry for revenge! The only problem was that he addressed it to the wrong studio...
"David zaslav you will PAYYY", said the fan, declaring war on Warner Bros. CEO, who has nothing to do with Hamster & Gretel.
Another fan trolled Dan Povenmire by pointing out that he apparently has a history for this. First Milo Murphy's Law, and now this....
"If I had a nickel for every time one of Dan's shows was short-lived, I'd have to nickles. which isn't a lot, but it sucks that it happened twice..."
There were also reports that since the whole creative staff was moving over to Phineas and Ferb, Disney had to bring an end to Hamster & Gretel. Of course, the conspiracy theorists were not to be left behind, and they argued that it was all part of a big ploy by Disney to make room for the Phineas and Ferb reboot!
Yet another fan took this opportunity to diss the studio for running around in circles:
"So... cancel Phineas and Ferb 3... so you can make some space for... more Phineas and Ferb 1? then what? cancel Phineas and Ferb 1 so you can then bring back Phineas and Ferb 2?"
Of course, Hamster & Gretel wasn't as popular as Phineas and Ferb, or some other flagship Disney shows. While the handful of fans who watched the show took to X with a mix of confusion and hilarity, others provided a bewildered shrug, claiming that they didn't know Disney even had such a show:
"They cancelled peepee poopoo pants after 2 seasons and a movie how will its 2 fans recover", mocked one fan (via X / @ZwafflezValt).
"And nothing of value was lost", trolled another (via X / @JoelstarArt).
While Hamster & Gretel didn't get the grand finale fans expected, its legacy lives on in GIFs, and fan theories about whether Hamster could beat up Perry the Platypus or not. With Phineas and Ferb reboot around the corner, let's hope that someday we can get a zany crossover between the shows!
