The 97th Academy Awards was held on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. It was a night of glamour, thrills, and surprise humor. Among the several unforgettable moments, a team of Los Angeles firefighters stole the show, not to accept an award, but to read a sequence of jokes off a teleprompter.

This special segment was stage-managed by host Conan O'Brien, who cunningly utilized the firefighters to recite some of his riskiest jokes, making the crowd burst into laughter.

The Dolby Theatre audience gave the firefighters their rightful standing ovation. Among them were Monica Barbaro, Kieran Culkin, and Elle Fanning, who clearly enjoyed every moment.

Not only did they get a standing ovation, but they also came prepared with jokes and jabs that hit just right. While most of the jokes hit the mark, the film that took the biggest roasting was Joker 2.

And, of course, the internet completely lost it.

A user said:

"Now that’s how you keep it spicy."

The firefighters didn’t even need to put out the flames!

Another user said:

"What a burn!!!!"

Well, they are firefighters.

One user went on to say:

"Joker 2 only will be remembered to be a joke."

Well, at least it lived up to the title, we guess?

A user highlighted:

"DC movies are done for. They be making jokes about them at the #Oscars."

At this point, even Batman couldn’t save them from these jokes.

A user suggests:

"Emilia deserves the joker 2 hate."

Not Emilia Pérez catching strays every time!

The Oscars' most surprising comedy performance: Firefighters reading teleprompters

On March 2, 2025, the 97th Academy Awards saw the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) take center stage in a comedic way.

Host Conan O'Brien called on a group of firefighters who had fought valiantly against the Palisades and Eaton wildfires earlier during the year to read jokes off the teleprompter.

O'Brien stated:

“Now, I know you’re going to find this hard to believe, but there are some jokes even I’m not brave enough to tell.”
“On behalf of myself, would you please read what’s in the prompter?”
“Remember, everyone in this audience has to laugh; these are heroes!”

The pokes started from LAFD Captain Erik Scott, who quipped:

"Our hearts go out to all of those who lost their homes... and I’m talking about the producers of Joker 2."

The audience erupted in laughter as the joke referenced the financial failure of the sequel Joker: Folie à Deux, which had underperformed at the box office despite its massive budget.

Then, LAFD pilot Jonith Johnson aimed his shot at Timothée Chalamet's performance as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. He quipped,

"To play Bob Dylan, Timothée Chalamet learned how to sing. In fact, his singing was so good, he almost lost the part".

Pasadena Fire Department Captain Jodi Slicker ended the segment with a shot at O'Brien himself:

"It’s great to be back with Conan. Usually, when he calls, he’s stuck in a tree."

O'Brien humorously replied

"It’s happened twice!"

The LA firefighters' appearance was more than a funny segment; it was a sincere compliment to their fearlessness and service.

Their presence came amid a tragic wave of wildfires sweeping across Southern California in January 2025, impacting zones such as the Pacific Palisades and Altadena.

The Los Angeles Fire Department did a great deal to fight these fires, and their work didn't go unrecognized.

The Oscars award ceremony gave way to honoring such heroes, where their sacrifices and the contribution their work made towards the community were acknowledged.
