If there’s one thing Mortal Kombat fans can agree on, it’s that the first movie had its highs, its lows, and a whole lot of “Why did they do that?” But despite the mixed reviews, Warner Bros. is giving it another roundhouse kick with Mortal Kombat 2. And this time, they’re bringing back Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, which is enough to make fans collectively lose their minds.
The first look at Sanada’s Scorpion just dropped, and while it should have been a simple “Oh cool, he’s back,” the internet, as always, had other plans. From excitement to skepticism to outright roasting, the reactions are exactly what you’d expect from a fandom that has been burned before both literally and metaphorically.
First look at Hiroyuki Sanada in Mortal Kombat sets the internet on fire
The official post announcing the return of Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion was supposed to be a straightforward reveal, but in true Mortal Kombat fashion, it escalated into an online fatality. Fans immediately started dissecting every inch of the image, questioning the lighting, the costume, and whether or not this movie will finally do justice to the legendary franchise.
One user perfectly summed up the collective trauma from video game adaptations:
“Nobody is actually watching this right ?”
At this point, Mortal Kombat fans have been through enough. They’ve seen Scorpion done dirty before, and they are begging the movie gods to get it right this time.
Another user, clearly unable to contain their excitement, wrote:
“Directly into my veins. I can’t get over there any faster.”
This is the kind of enthusiasm usually reserved for concert tickets or limited-edition sneakers, but hey, if Mortal Kombat 2 delivers, it might just be worth the rush.
Of course, no internet reaction thread is complete without the take my money GIF.
Because sometimes, words aren’t enough, and a meme just does the job better.
However, not everyone was immediately convinced. One fan pointed out a slight issue:
“Jesus Christ I couldn’t tell that was Scorpion if they didn’t tell me.”
A fair critique because when your main character looks more like an NPC than a legendary warrior, questions will be asked.
And of course, we had the inevitable Sub-Zero discourse. One fan, very unhappy with the selective reveal, said:
“Of course Ed dipshit doesn’t show us Sub-Zero smh.”
What’s a discussion without at least one Sub-Zero fan demanding equal screen time?
The hype is real, but so is the skepticism. While fans are thrilled to see Hiroyuki Sanada back in action, the fear of another underwhelming adaptation is lurking in the shadows like a Fatality waiting to happen.
But hey, if nothing else, at least we’re getting more internet gold in the process. Whether the movie turns out to be a flawless victory or a brutal finish, one thing is certain Mortal Kombat fans will be loud about it.
