On October 28, the Vatican introduced its anime mascot named Luce. Within a week, the blue-haired mascot has become an internet sensation. Luce, (pronounced loo-chay) has been introduced ahead of the 2025 Jubilee Year and is supposed to represent Catholic pilgrims.
Why anime though? Well, according to Archbishop Fisichella, the mascot was introduced in an attempt by the church "to live even within the pop culture so beloved by our youth."
Luce is a young girl with blue hair and big blue eyes, donning a yellow raincoat and green muddy boots. She wears a rosary around her neck and carries a staff that is meant to symbolize the pilgrimage towards eternity.
The yellow raincoat symbolizes journeying through life's many storms while also representing the Vatican flag. The green muddy boots indicate a long and difficult journey.
The adorable anime mascot has naturally piqued the interest of both Catholic and non-Catholic social media users. Within a week, the internet has been flooded with memes and posts about the blue-eyed Luce.
Luce the Catholic mascot has taken the internet by storm in less than a week
It has been just a week since the Catholic Church unveiled its new mascot and the internet has had a mostly positive reaction to the blue-haired anime pilgrim. Social media platforms like X, Instagram, and Reddit showed their acceptance of this new character in the way they know best - hilarious memes.
Some memes showed Luce invoking Christian messages of prayer and warding off the Devil. Others show her in pro-life movements, saving babies from Planned Parenthood Abortion centres. However, one of the most popular memes show the little pilgrim replicating a scene from "The Shining," where she uses her staff to break a door while the Devil cowers behind it.
Here are some other popular memes about the newly introduced mascot that have left the internet abuzz.
While the anime mascot has mostly won over the hearts of many younger Catholics and non-Catholics alike, many orthodox members of the Church are not pleased.
But the blue-eyed Catholic mascot has already made an appearance in the Lucca Comics and Games convention in Tuscany, Italy, and will make another appearance at the Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan next year.
