Director James Gunn is pushing back on the heat surrounding the postponement of The Batman 2 by a full year. Just this Friday, it was revealed that the film's release has now been pushed to October 1, 2027, from October 2, 2026.

In his defense, the Superman director noted:

"Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.”

In the wake of the announcement, fans are reacting with a blend of varied reactions, ranging from support to an outcry of criticism, though it's mostly the latter. Some are cracking jokes at the expense of the director, while others are poking fun at various other aspects:

"Reeves better be writing the greatest script ever if it’s taking this long," one user jokingly demanded.

Scores more chimed in:

"It's a batman movie guys let's not overthink this. Guy in a costume fights crime with a kid, inspires hope, fights a super villain on a rooftop bada bing bada boom," someone penned.
"Matt thinks he’s playboi carti," another dissed.
"Someone tell Matt Reeves he is literally just writing Batman 2 not the odissey," one more joked.

The comments didn't end there, though. Scroll down to see some more memes:

James Gunn says his decision to postpone the sequel to The Batman is normal, here's why:

Just this Friday, in the wake of the mounting backlash against the director's decision to postpone the release of The Batman 2, James Gunn took to Threads to state his piece, noting that it is “fairly common” for films of such a big budget to take time before the sequel comes out:

“To be fair, a 5 year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,” Gunn wrote on Threads. “7 years between Alien and Aliens. 14 years between Incredibles. 7 years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatars. 36 years between Top Guns. And, of course, 6 years between Guardians Vol 2 and Vol 3.”

As for the sequel to The Batman, production is expected to commence in the third quarter of 2025. Despite the film not being a part of the James Gunn and Peter Safran DC universe, the two are championing the project. Nonetheless, the sequel, whose official name has yet to be announced, will host Robert Pattinson as the titular character.

Previously titled The Batman: Part II, its prequel was a massive hit at the box office, nabbing well over $772 million globally, The Hollywood Reporter has pointed out.
