Glen Powell is officially Hollywood’s golden boy or at least CinemaCon seems to think so. The actor, known for his roles in Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You, is set to receive the prestigious Star of the Year award at this year’s event.
Naturally, the internet had some thoughts.
Glen Powell Wins Star of the Year at CinemaCon
CinemaCon, the annual convention where Hollywood pats itself on the back, has named Glen Powell as its Star of the Year. This means Powell is officially That Guy, the one whose face is on every billboard, in every rom-com trailer, and possibly your best friend’s latest celebrity crush.
But wait, there’s more. Powell will also appear at a luncheon alongside Josh Brolin, Colman Domingo, and director Edgar Wright to promote The Running Man, an upcoming film that has already sparked some intense (and hilarious) reactions online. Because if Hollywood loves anything, it’s remaking a classic that fans are very, very protective of.
Powell’s win didn’t just make headlines, it made Twitter (sorry, X) users put their comedy caps on. While some fans celebrated the actor’s rise, others had more pressing concerns.
A confused fan asked the real question:
Great question. If Powell isn’t walking away with a celestial body named after him, is it even worth it?
Then there was The Running Man discourse. Because when Hollywood decides to redo a beloved movie, the stakes are high and so are the snarky comments.
One user (@rendawg90) said:
“They are messing with a classic. It better be good.”
Translation: No pressure, Glen. No pressure at all.
Of course, Powell has built a reputation for charming audiences into watching movies they never planned to see. One fan (@ElifOOO___) put it best:
“Me omw to see another movie just bc of him…”
Glen Powell could star in a movie about paint drying, and it would still be a box office hit. That’s the power of a man who can rock a flight suit and a rom-com tux.
Then came the brief moment of confusion from @Yudha96424135, courtesy of the Daredevil fandom:
“For a second I thought it said Officer Powell from Daredevil.”
One can only imagine the emotional rollercoaster of thinking a minor Marvel character was suddenly Hollywood royalty.
And, of course, there’s always that person in every viral discussion, the one who drops an existential crisis into the mix.
A little dramatic? Maybe. But also, very on-brand for the internet.
Glen Powell’s rise to the top has been equal parts impressive and meme-worthy. Whether it’s his sudden rom-com king status, his uncanny ability to sell a movie, or his extremely punchable (but loveable) smirk, the man has a grip on pop culture right now.
CinemaCon may have given him Star of the Year, but the real award? The fact that every time he gets cast in a new movie, half the internet is ready with memes and the other half is ready to buy a ticket.
And if The Running Man turns out to be good? Well, then Powell might just be Star of the Decade next.
