Selena Gomez and The Weeknd's previous relationship still makes an appearance in pop culture drama, but this time it takes the form of an Oscars twist. Fans noticed Selena's exclusion from the list of nominees when her most recent film, Emilia Perez, received many Oscar nominations this year. A rush of replies followed a widely shared tweet that speculated that Gomez's ex-boyfriend, The Weeknd, maybe somehow be to blame.

One tweet said,

"Nah, it's just that Emilia Perez is horrible,"

addressing rumors that The Weeknd, who joined the Academy board last year, could have been involved in the omission.

Fans are certain that the ghosts of Selena and The Weeknd's brief 2017 romance may be haunting this year's awards season, even though both have moved on professionally—Selena with her acting and music career, while The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) dabbled in acting. With Emilia Perez in the news, the conspiracy theories gained traction, especially after Ariana Grande, who has ties to The Weeknd, was added to the mix.

Fans speculate if The Weeknd’s Academy vote kept his ex Selena Gomez off the Oscar nomination list—or is Emilia Perez to blame?

As usual, Twitter users took the theory and turned it into comedic gold. One user in true Twitter fashion, quoted the viral tweet with,

"Well..." alongside a video of a woman saying, “thank god,” poking fun at the overblown nature of the situation.

Fans of The Weeknd couldn’t resist chiming in with a reference to one of his most emotional songs, tweeting,

“Call out my name 😭😭😭😭😂😂😂😂,” alluding to his rumored lingering feelings for Selena.

Not everyone bought into the speculation. One fan tweeted,

"That was not the reason though," casting doubt on the theory.

Another chimed in with a simple

"LMAO," showcasing the humor behind the whole idea.

But the most hilarious responses came from users pointing out the absurdity of blaming The Weeknd for Selena's snub. One tweet, accompanied by a man laughing GIF, read,

"They're blaming The Weeknd (an Oscar voter) for Ariana being nominated and not Selena."

The sarcasm reached its peak with a tweet that stated,

“Yes cuz out of all the thousands of voters in the Academy his vote is the best one… be serious,”

shutting down the idea that The Weeknd’s single vote could sway such decisions.

The Weeknd and Selena: A Complicated History

Although conspiracy theories are popular on the internet, the truth is a bit more complex. Despite being ex-partners, Selena Gomez and The Weeknd seem to have moved on from their prior romance. After switching from music to acting, The Weeknd featured in The Idol and is on the Academy board, which is why Emilia Perez received so many nominations. Although Gomez played a significant part in the movie, she was not nominated for an Oscar on her own.

The Weeknd's appointment to the Academy's board last year fuelled the flames, leading some online users to speculate that he may have influenced the nominations (the viral tweet being the main source of the speculation). In the meantime, his regular partner Ariana Grande did get recognition for her work, which fuelled fan theories that The Weeknd was involved in Gomez's rejection.

However, the notion that The Weeknd's one vote might decide someone's candidacy is unrealistic given the thousands of Academy votes, but it is still amusing to the internet.
