Bestselling author James Patterson and American YouTuber MrBeast have confirmed collaborating on a thriller novel. The book has reportedly been inspired by Netflix's Squid Game, in which players compete in grueling tasks in order to claim the highest title known as The One.
According to Vulture, major publishers are bidding for the publishing rights, with offers reportedly reaching as high as tens of millions of dollars. There is also the possibility of the book being adapted into a movie or TV series.
Although James Patterson has authored numerous books previously, this marks MrBeast's debut in the literary world. Given the novel's premise, fans are already drawing comparisons to the latter's previous endeavour, Beast Games, which featured a similar concept.
Netizens have plenty to say about this unexpected collaboration. Some are wondering how publishers are bickering over the rights to a book that hasn't even been written yet. Others can't help but laugh at the endless Squid Game comparisons.
Meanwhile, many are surprised by MrBeast's aspiration to take up a pen. A few are even joking that at this point, he's done it all — what could be left for him to do?
Social media users react to James Patterson and MrBeast co-authoring a book
As soon as the news hit the internet, social media users couldn't resist drawing comparisons to The Hunger Games. Some jokingly suggested that the book sounded like a knockoff, while others were amused that publishing rights were being secured before the book was written — quipping that that's the real thriller here!
Some of the users had a more satirical take on the matter as they poked fun at how wealthy people always seem to make money before even lifting a finger to do the task at hand.
One user (@Worldwide_Jim) on X mentioned,
"So the Hunger Games...they're writing The Hunger Games?"
Another user (@Its_Jenna_xoxo) added:
"The real thriller is how this got an 8-figure deal before a single page was written."
Another person (@MemesAgnstHmnty) commented:
"Dude makes money before he has anything to sell 😭"
One user mockingly suggested that the book might as well be titled something like Squid Game. Others took the humor one step further, imagining MrBeast winning a Nobel Prize in Literature!
Meanwhile, some are roasting his obsession with Squid Game — first leading him to recreate it in real life, and now turning it into a book.
One user on X @bigtiamnot joked, saying:
"Would be really sick if they named it something like ‘Squid Games’ or something."
Another user@jhondrl went on to say:
"Can you imagine if the next Nobel Prize in Literature went to a YouTuber? MrBeast is already closer with his thriller with Patterson."
Meanwhile, one user @friezsnake commented:
"Now Mr Beast wants to be a novelist."
One user went on to drop a GIF that perfectly summed up almost the entirety of the internet's reaction:
A user @psljags71 roasted MrBeast, saying:
"MrBeast really saw Squid Game and just decided that was gonna be his entire life’s work after that for fun. Not denying the charitable stuff he does, but this is no different than Squid Game or MrBeast Games on Amazon except it’s world traveling and not currently a game show."
How the book will actually turn out still remains a mystery. Until then, the internet is having a blast roasting it!
