Hollywood is eagerly anticipating the release of the Monopoly movie. Writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have reportedly been hired to script the film. The internet is also geared up with its jokes and puns.
According to Deadline, the upcoming movie will be produced by Margot Robbie's LuckyChap Entertainment in addition to Lionsgate and Hasbro.
Hasbro's classic board game endeavor is officially no longer in development jail, the news outlet added. However, tables can turn at any moment and no one can say anything for sure unless the actual film hits the big screens.
Great, huh? Well, not on social media. The announcement of a Monopoly film was just out when the internet picked up its Chance cards and began roasting it.
A user hilariously noted:
"Waiting for the uno cinematic universe next."
In that sense, the post-credits scene should tease a crossover with the Go Fish franchise.
"Bro they’re just picking games at random to make movies about now."
Let's call dibs on ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors – The Trilogy.’
Another user added:
"So basically Wolf of Wall Street 2."
Leo gonna give a legendary performance and probably still lose the Oscar.
Poking fun at Jumanji, a user commented:
"Starring The Rock & Kevin hart."
Of course. Who else is Hollywood gonna call?
A user asked:
"Who keeps coming up with these “live-action” ideas."
Literally everyone with a whiteboard and a deadline.
A user went on to say:
"Jeez they'll make a movie out of anything nowadays... 🤣🤣"
Don’t give them ideas.
Will the Monopoly board game make it to the big screen?
Monopoly has been a part of pop culture since its beginnings in the early 1900s, boasting an impressive 99% international brand recognition, being sold in more than 100 countries, and selling a near half-a-billion copies to date.
With screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Game Night) on board, one can probably assume a combination of witty humor, surprising turns, and high-drama mayhem.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president, Erin Westerman, told Deadline:
“We knew LuckyChap would be a beacon for the best talent in town, and Lionsgate & Hasbro are thrilled that Goldstein & Daley have decided to join the fun. We’ve been longtime admirers of their work — telling bold, original, intelligent stories for all audiences. They are the perfect architects for this franchise.”
Will the Monopoly film go bankrupt or break the bank?
Unlike G.I. Joe or Barbie, Monopoly does not have a built-in lore, a universe of iconic characters, or an obvious narrative basis.
The creators can write a new and unique storyline to the full creative extent of their ability, but also need to ensure that they retain the spirit of Monopoly, which includes excitement of negotiating sales, grief of bankruptcies, and joy or annoyance towards the power of command on the board.
While some fans are expecting something in the Jumanji genre. Others picture something more satirical in style—a cutting indictment of capitalism with ruthless real estate barons competing for control of the board.
The boom in game-to-movie adaptation
Since Barbie broke the box office bank, there's been renewed interest in taking children's games and turning them into franchise blockbusters. Margot Robbie herself is speculated to have signed up to produce a live-action version of Sims.
Lionsgate, which purchased Hasbro's entertainment studio eOne in a $500 million transaction, is counting on Monopoly to be one of its flagship projects.
