Mojang shuts down 'Minecraft 2' rumors, fans start digging for jokes

Mojang Studios has officially shut down any prospects of a Minecraft 2.

With all the rumors that are currently out, particularly after the huge success of A Minecraft Movie, they made it official that a sequel to the game isn't in the works. If anyone is anticipating the sequel to the game, they need to have a second Earth.

Ingela Garneij, the executive producer of Minecraft Vanilla, said to IGN:

“Do you think we're going to have an Earth 2? No, no, there's no Minecraft 2.”

“We've existed for 15 years”, stated Garneij. “We want to exist at least 15 years more so we actually, Agnes [Larsson, Minecraft Vanilla’s game director] and I, we work as a team. We set the vision and strategy for our game for what can we do beyond that.”

Minecraft is not going to turn into a free-play game, and they also aren't going to utilize AI to generate new content for the game automatically. There goes all your rumours.

Fans are enjoying memes regarding Minecraft not employing AI, some even comparing it with GTA. But most people are fixated on the 15-year wait statement, joking that they'll be in a nursing home waiting by the time a major update comes through.

Players are delighted that the developers will not be introducing AI to Minecraft and are celebrating with wholesome memes.

Another user dropped a loving GIF over AI usage.

One user @Angelica_Reed1 suggested:

A user believed that they did something there when they left a comment stating that if Minecraft is not going to make Minecraft 2, then what about when they reach 1.99? Okay, we appreciate the pun here.

And then there were some who were comparing the game to online GTA. Users even pointed out that they are not going to create a sequel because we are not done with the first one.

The statement clears the confusion that began with a misinterpreted social media post made by Markus "Notch" Persson, the creator of Minecraft, in early 2025. Notch had been jokingly commenting on the possibility of a "spiritual successor" to Minecraft, but some fans and media reports mistakenly believed it was a Minecraft 2 announcement.
