Kanye West, never one to shy away from bold declarations, has once again found himself at the center of a cultural debate—this time, in the gaming world. The multi-hyphenate artist-turned-occasional gamer declared The Last of Us Part II "by far the best game ever made so far" on his Instagram story.

But that was still not enough because Kanye went further to say that he's playing the game Survivor+ which is that challenging difficulty that even veterans only dare to enter with some reservation. Of course, the internet had long before then offered endless opinions.

The Last of Us Part II, a game from 2020 for the initiated, was developed by Naughty Dog and represents action-adventure type gameplay that seems to split fans into opposing factions. Such has been its wrenching, layered narrative with fleshed-out complex characters, together with gameplay in brutally realistic levels, it was awarded more than 320 Game of the Year awards, besides selling millions of copies, as if everyone needed to read, watch, and experience its vision.

This surprise endorsement by a rather low-profile gamer such as Kanye surprised, but the words only add another layer of mystery and aura to the game.

Fans react: Humor, skepticism, and Kanye’s gaming persona

As might be expected, Kanye's statement provoked mixed reactions of amusement, skepticism, and utter confusion. Social media sites were bombarded with varied responses - outright agreement and ridicule of Kanye's taste in general. The fan base jumped into the fray quickly, tweeting on Twitter and sharing on Reddit about the controversy over Kanye's remarks.

"Maybe this will motivate them to produce the 3rd one finally lol," said one of the fans as he referred to the highly-awaited sequel of the series.

Then, another joined in and said, "Alright now he's gone too far," apparently unsatisfied with the hot take about gaming from Kanye.

Some were utterly baffled by the fact that Kanye is a gamer: "Kanye is a gamer?? And let's chill with The Last of Us being the best game ever."

Others did not stop themselves from stating something about the man's credibility. One wrote, "Good game but, dude, everything Kanye says is wrong 99 percent of the time."

Adding a meta-comment regarding the news coverage itself, the user had this to say: "I love that this is the worst news site on the internet and it loses zero confidence over its inability to source or prove anything it says."

It is a reflection of just how much every move and statement of Kanye is a talking point, unfounded or not.

While Kanye’s glowing review might seem like a simple celebrity endorsement, it also highlights the cultural crossover between gaming and mainstream entertainment. The Last of Us Part II isn’t just a game; it’s a storytelling phenomenon that has earned its place in broader pop culture, thanks in part to the critically acclaimed HBO adaptation of its predecessor.

Season 2 of HBO Max’s television adaptation of the game is due out in Spring 2025, with series creator Naughty Dog turning to a new title, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Kanye’s involvement, however tangential, draws more eyes to the gaming world—and perhaps even inspires a new audience to pick up a controller.

In typical Kanye fashion, his statement about The Last of Us Part II has managed to be both provocative and oddly endearing. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the game or a skeptic of Kanye’s opinions, there’s no denying that his comments have reignited discussions about the franchise’s impact.

Perhaps his praise will indeed “motivate them to produce the 3rd one finally,” as one fan joked. Until then, Kanye remains an unlikely but memorable addition to the ever-growing list of The Last of Us enthusiasts.

For now, gamers can enjoy the irony of Kanye conquering *Survivor+” mode—and maybe wonder if he’ll tackle other classics next. A Kanye review of Elden Ring, anyone?
