Lady Gaga roasts herself on SNL — and wants nothing to do with 'Joker 3'

Lady Gaga returned in a big way to Saturday Night Live (SNL) as host and musical guest, her fifth appearance on the iconic sketch show. Her opening monologue was a lighthearted blend of self-deprecation and quick wit, as she looked back at her previous SNL appearances and recent movie endeavors.

Her visit was well-timed — her new album, Mayhem, released one day prior.

Gaga, however, quipped that she wasn't there only to do promotions. She wanted to demonstrate her acting skills, too.

Lady Gaga's SNL monologue: Self-deprecation and humor

Lady Gaga's SNL monologue started things off by referencing her evolution as an actress, making light of her starring role in Joker: Folie à Deux — a movie that, while garnering enormous buzz, went on to sweep the Razzie Awards, including Worst Sequel and Worst Onscreen Couple with Joaquin Phoenix.

“I select films that would showcase my craft as a serious actor, films such as Joker 2. Apparently, people thought it was awesome. Joaquin [Phoenix] and I even got nominated for a Razzie, which is an award for the worst films of the year. So we won worst onscreen duo.”

Rather than avoiding the criticism, Gaga took it in stride with her own trademark style, teasing that she adores receiving awards, even the non-prestigious ones.

She introduced the crowd to the new career goal she's chasing after: The "EGORT" — a humorous reimagining of the coveted EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) but with a bonus Razzie tossed in for good measure.

“But jokes on them. I love winning things. My Razzie brings me one step closer to an EGORT. It’s like an EGOT, but it’s hurtful.”

Taking a walk down memory lane, Gaga reminisced about her initial hosting stint of SNL in 2013, when she was 27.

She teased that her performance has stood the test of time — before adding quickly that there was no need to Google her musical guest that evening, cleverly sidestepping any reference to R. Kelly.

“I’m so happy to be back at SNL. The last time I hosted was in 2013 and every aspect of my performance aged amazingly. So there’s no need to Google SNL 2013, Lady Gaga featuring R. Kelly. I won’t bring it up because that would be bad.”

She rounded out the quips with a laughable observation on getting older in the music world, stating that 38 is the

"scientifically ideal age for a female pop star."

She went further by playfully exaggerating the ages of other artists, stating Charli XCX is 75 and Tate McRae is

"basically my biological grandmother."

Conclusion of the monologue

Gaga capped off her monologue by telling the audience to expect a night to remember in terms of both her performances and music.

She jokingly assured fans she was fully vested in providing the best SNL performance possible — before slyly tacking on that, whether anything goes as planned or not, she's definitely not putting her name in for a spot in Joker 3. She said:

“I respect everyone here so much, so tonight, I promise to act, to sing and to not do Joker 3.”
