Ahoy, mateys! A new Pirates of the Caribbean movie might be on the horizon, and Johnny Depp could be stumbling back into the role of Captain Jack Sparrow.
According to The DisInsider, Walt Disney Studios is allegedly setting sail on a fresh Pirates installment, targeting a late 2025 production start on Saint Vincent island.
Jerry Bruckheimer previously spilled that two separate scripts were in the works—one keeping Depp’s Sparrow at the helm and another rebooting the whole thing.
"Jeff Nathanson is working on a script. We have another one… We have two, and we don’t know who’s gonna win the horse race at this point. But hopefully, in the next month, I’ll have a script, and maybe Disney will want to make it."
The rumor was enough to send social media into a frenzy. One X user joked:
"Johnny getting his 300M."
One user mentioned:
"no thanks il stick to the first 3"
This user, who is clearly here for the tea, declared:
"God I hope they put in some jokes about the trial"
A user went on to react with a fun GIF:
Another suspicious user said:
"if thats true they must’ve given him the biggest bag of all time"
Meanwhile, this one user who has done the math, says:
"Bro's too old for it now"
Is Johnny Depp starring in the new Pirates movie?
For those who haven’t been living under a rock, Disney and Depp have had a complicated relationship. After the studio unceremoniously dropped him from the franchise amid his legal battles with Amber Heard, Depp declared he wouldn’t return for all the treasure in the world.
Well, either the tides have changed or the treasure chest just got way bigger, because Disney is reportedly trying to make amends. Bruckheimer has been an unwavering Depp loyalist throughout, subtly hinting at a potential Sparrow comeback.
Yet, despite all the chatter, no official deal has been inked, and Depp himself hasn’t confirmed a return.
That means this is all as solid as a ghost ship in the fog—it could be real, could vanish by morning.
The Pirates franchise
Since The Curse of the Black Pearl dropped in 2003, the Pirates saga has raked in over $4.5 billion worldwide. Naturally, Disney isn’t about to let that kind of cash cow drift off. But getting this sixth film afloat has been challenging—ten years of rewrites, delays, and enough rumors fueled by tabloids.
Now if the film happens, it’s being framed as a reboot. If you’re wondering how you “reboot” a franchise that’s already been here, welcome to modern Hollywood.
Bruckheimer was quoted as saying by Dark Horizons:
“It’s a reboot, but if it was up to me, he would be in it.”
Other courses on the horizon
In case Depp decides he’s got better things to do, Disney has another route mapped out. One potential project is a female-led spin-off starring Margot Robbie. Another idea is a total cast overhaul.
Writers Craig Mazin (The Last of Us) and Ted Elliott (original Pirates co-writer) initially had a script, but that got reworked by Jeff Nathanson. Even in a best-case scenario, the movie wouldn’t be hitting theaters before late 2025. But can the franchise survive without Depp?
Fans have been loudly demanding his return.
