Jason Momoa is finally going to walk in the shoes of the DC Universe's most iconic space biker, Lobo. The man who shook the ocean waves as Aquaman is trading his underwater kingdom for intergalactic chaos.
The news arrived hot on December 30, 2024, straight from Momoa's Instagram feed. Momoa spilled the tea, confessing:
"So Lobo was… he was always my favorite. It's the perfect role for me."
Fans instantly went into a meme frenzy. And one cheeky X user had to throw some shade:
"Bit of a downgrade. But what can you do?"
A user said: "Wonder who they will cast as the new Aquaman when the time comes."
Another user mentioned: "But hes already aqua man. christ is the dcu gonna be a mess."
A comment read: "Zachary Levi waiting for his James Gunn phone call."
A user humorously mentioned: "He was already aqua man. Is there nobody else who could play lobo? Whats the rock doing now?"
"NO WAY ITS HAPPENING", said a user.
A user reacted with a meme:
A user said: "James Gunn is going to make him dance and do fart joke scenes. Probably turn a fight scene into a musical."
Who is Lobo, anyway?
Lobo is basically what happens when a space bounty hunter goes full throttle on the IDGAF lifestyle. Hailing from the now-extinct planet Czarnia (extinct because, spoiler, he wiped them out), Lobo is a cigar-chomping metalhead menace with superhuman strength, regenerative powers, and a devil-may-care attitude.
Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen in 1983, Lobo made his dramatic entry into the Omega Men #3 scene. Throughout the years, he earned himself a rep as DC's bad boy who took contracts hunting villains, heroes, and basically anyone who has a price for their head. His hobbies include breaking the fourth wall, destroying things, and, weirdly, chaos fashion sense.
The movie details
Mark your calendars as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow starts shooting on January 13, 2025, and will hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
It is adapted from the 2022 comic series Tom King, published with a level of depth about the evolution of sidekick vibes within Kara Zor-El's journey to become one full-fledged superheroine.
Milly Alcock (from House of the Dragon) stars as Kara. She's set to butt heads with Matthias Schoenaerts, who is the sinister Krem of the Yellow Hills, and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, Kara's sidekick.
It's all in the hands of Craig Gillespie, who directed I, Tonya, and Cruella, so anticipate a lot of humor, grit, and just plain awesome space cinematics.
Momoa's hype levels
Jason Momoa is geeking HARD. For years, the man's been dropping not-so-subtle hints about wanting to play Lobo.
During a promo tour for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Momoa famously said,
"I mean, listen, if they call and ask me to play him, it's a 'F** yeah!'"
And he didn't lie. The Insta post announcing his role included a throwback to that interview because, you know, full-circle flex.
Why this casting slaps?
For one thing, Jason Momoa as Lobo just makes sense. He has the larger-than-life persona, rugged charm, and that wild energy we have both on and off-screen, just like it was customized for him.
And for DC Studios, it's a signal flare for the bold, experimental direction they're taking under James Gunn and Peter Safran.
