Will Smith has dropped a confirmation about I Am Legend 2 revealing that the highly anticipated film is moving forward. While we’ve been hearing the same since 2022, it has not seen the light of the day so far. However, Smith recently appeared on xQc's Twitch stream on February 19, 2025, and noted:
“Me and Michael B. Jordan have sat down for about a week and went through character stuff”
The users' reactions to the news were mixed. Some are thrilled, some are uninterested, and some are making jokes about Chris Rock.
One X user joked:
"Is Chris rock playing the zombies?"
Only if they need someone to bring the dead back to life with laughter.
Another user mentioned:
"Which scene does Will Smith smack Chris Rock"
That would be the moment when Will Smith decided to take 'keep my wife's name out of your mouth' a little too literally!
"Cgi chris rocks face on all the zombies and I'll watch"
Some men want to watch the world burn, that's true.
"I AM LEGEND 2: Because in Hollywood, even death has a sequel."
Yeah, maybe this time, the real virus is the lack of original ideas.
A user went on to say:
"It’ll be a slap in the face if they don’t get this sequel right."
We see what you're trying to do there.
A user asked:
"What would be the story"
What would the film's purpose be if they gave us the plot now?
The dynamic duo we didn’t know we needed
Will Smith originally wasn’t planning on returning. He’d made peace with leaving I Am Legend as a standalone masterpiece. But then Michael B. Jordan pulled up with an idea so good that Smith had to reconsider.
As Smith told Entertainment Tonight in 2022:
“It was one of those ones I was gonna leave alone, and then I heard the idea.”
“I can't talk about it yet, but it's a really, really cool concept and [Jordan] was a part of creating the idea.”
Who’s holding the pen?
The original film’s screenwriter, Akiva Goldsman, is back in the game.
That means we’re getting more of that eerie, slow-burn psychological horror mixed with action. Goldsman hinted in an interview with Collider in 2024 that this sequel will lean into how nature reclaims cities after humanity’s downfall.
"You imagine a post-apocalyptic scenario, but if you actually do research about what happens to cities, it's pretty much the opposite. The world returns, and it returns in a way that is kind of spectacular."
"So, that's a really exciting playground for all of us because it's not what you imagine. It's not your father's I Am Legend."
Big expectations and bigger questions
The first I Am Legend wasn’t just a hit—it was the post-apocalyptic film of its time, raking in nearly $585 million worldwide, per Variety.
But it also hit deeper making audiences question morality, heroism, and what it means to be truly alone.
The sequel is set to stress these themes, while Michael B. Jordan will play an important character, which raises one very important question: Who is Jordan playing?
Is he another lone survivor? A new breed of Darkseeker? How did he miss the memo for the first apocalypse?
The resurrection of Robert Neville
Didn’t Robert Neville die? Like, in an explosion, heroically sacrificing himself?
Well, yes… if you only watched the theatrical version.
But real ones know that the alternate ending is where Neville survives.
The sequel is running with the version where Neville makes it out alive, which means he’s back in action, ready to fight more Darkseekers and maybe find some actual peace.
