After laying waste the Justice League, Godzilla has set its sights on the Marvel Universe this time. In a move that has left comic book fans both baffled and delighted, Marvel Comics has announced Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe issue is coming this July. A wraparound cover was also released along with the groundbreaking news as Marvel looks to milk this premise for every ounce of absurdity.
From Marvel's official excerpts:
"LOOK OUT NEW YORK! A previously dormant Godzilla has been angrily awoken and begun carving a path of annihilation as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes band together to try and stop its cataclysmic rampage! But when their combined efforts fail to slow the Bringer of Destruction, Earth’s heroes are forced to go to extraordinary lengths to try and bring Godzilla down – including joining forces with Earth's most devious villains! But will this be enough to stop Godzilla as it tears straight through the Marvel Universe into the Dark Dimension and other realms? Plus, how is the King of the Monsters connected to the mysterious metal, Vibranium, and what does this mean for Wakanda? In the face of an unstoppable force of nature, the Marvel Universe must come together like never before in this earth-shattering fight for Earth’s survival. It’s all hands on deck in the FIRST of FIVE electrifying chapters in this epic saga!"
Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe announcement wreaks havoc on timeline
The premise for the first issue is delightfully absurd and promises some of the most insane matchups possible. From the Avengers to The X-Men, from the Fantastic Four to Spider-Man and Black Panther, everybody and their dog will be teaming together to take down the monstrosity at hand.
This is the kind of madness that is only possible in comics, and frankly, we wouldn't have it any other way! When the news dropped, fans took it upon themselves to decode what this meant for the multiverse and social media turned into a glorious mess of speculation:
"If Godzilla doesn’t step on Iron Man first I’m not reading", joked one fan (via X / @szaseiji).
There was a frenzied atmosphere on X as some fans sided with the giant lizard in the fight. It was less about hate for the Avengers and more about the sheer joy they are about to get when this meme finally comes true:
Of course, when the news dropped fans also started debating which heroes amongst the current crop would be strong enough to take on the monster lizard. Some fans reckoned it should definitely be not Hawk Eye, as he would get swatted aside like a fly, and hilariously pleaded with him to sit this one out.
From the synopsis that Marvel gave, it is clear that nobody is safe from Godzilla's rampage but that didn't stop fans from coming up with their own theories. Amongst the Avengers, the clamor was the greatest for the God Of Thunder, followed by The Hulk in a distant second:
"Thor can take him. He has some experience with unruly lizards", quipped one fan (via X / @Dylanvanderr).
The poster that Marvel unveiled gives us a sneak peek into the fight that is about to break out. Captain America somehow found himself to be the butt of jokes as fans made fun of him for rolling into a fight with Godzilla while being piggybacked by Captain Marvel:
"Idk what cap gon do unless mfer got the mjolnir", joked the fan (via X / @heavensentcozi).
"Love this shit a** drawings where non flying heroes just randomly pop up mid air as if they had anything to step on, crazy mf's", another fan added, complimenting the poster for its ingenuity.
Amid the chaos, one fan decided to take this opportunity to throw a gut punch wrapped in humor Disney's way. With the announcement that Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe issue coming in July, the fan cheekily blamed Disney for destroying the MCU first:
"But @Disney is already doing that."
As Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe approaches, fans are having the time of their lives speculating about what could happen. Even with fan speculation at the highest point it has ever been, it doesn’t really matter if these theories hold water. The real joy lies in watching fans tying themselves in knots while trying to explain how a radioactive lizard is able to take on the might of the entire Marvel Universe!
