Anthony Mackie still doesn’t get it. The actor was in an interview with his Captain America: Brave New World co-star Danny Ramirez where he found himself staring at a bunch of memes featuring his own face.

His reaction was simple “I still don’t get it!”.

“I’ve seen this before and I still don’t get it. I wanna get it.”

Then he turned to face Ramirez and asked whether he understood, to which he joked:

“Don’t look at me like that. You don’t know anything about me”

Although both actors burst into laughter, we are unable to ascertain if Mackie understood.

The internet has taken a perfectly normal series of facial expressions and turned them into a meme sensation. And honestly, not everyone wakes up expecting their resting face to become a cultural phenomenon.

It was soon time for the internet to deliver entertaining remarks. One X user stated:

"Hes the only that knows why Thor was crying. I swear to God he knows"

We may never know why Thor was crying, but judging by that look, he definitely does.

A user mentioned:

"Is like he’s in on a joke or knows something really funny about you and trying not to laugh 😂😂😂"

That’s the universal “I know something you don’t” face, and it’s both hilarious and terrifying.

One user commented:

"What makes it funny is that is just his face profile. He's always doing that face by accident lol."

His face just naturally looks like he’s about to roast you.

Another user went on to say:

"He actually looks like he's always trying not to burst out laughing. Like he's just thinking of a joke 24/7."

We believe Mackie always remembers something hilarious mid-conversation.

A user quipped:

"That’s hilarious! 😂 He does look like he is speaking through his eyes and saying “I know ya.” 😅"

The man just connected the dots, leave him be!

A user highlighted:

"Anthony Mackie trying to understand his own meme status is the most Anthony Mackie thing ever. The internet works in mysterious ways, Cap"

The man is effortlessly hilarious without even trying.

The birth of the Mackie meme

The first stone of this meme was thrown by Facebook user Jason Hyman on March 15, 2021. Hyman pointed out something everyone subconsciously noticed but never put into words.

He uploaded a collage of Mackie’s best “I know something you don’t” faces and captioned it:

“Bruh Anthony Mackie always look like he know something about you.”

And just like that, the internet had its next favorite reaction image.

The post gathered over 4,000 likes. Reddit caught wind of it within days, with users on /r/marvelmemes and /r/thefalconandthews running with the joke.

Soon, captions evolved. Some went for mystery, some went for absurdity, like the classic, “Guess what?.... Chicken butt.”

The power of "the face"

So, what is it about Mackie’s face that turned it into a meme? Simple—his expression is the perfect mix of “I have the tea” and “But you’re not ready for it.”

There’s an unspoken confidence in his smirk, a knowing look. People have used it to joke about everything.

It’s the face of someone who knows your most embarrassing childhood memory.

The face of a friend who just saw your ex out in public… with someone new.

The face of your sibling when they know they’re about to snitch but haven’t decided on the price yet.

The Captain America era

Beyond the memes, Mackie has been making waves in the MCU. Captain America: Brave New World, which premiered on February 14, 2025, marks the first full-length film where Mackie’s Sam Wilson officially carries the Captain America title.

During the latest interview, Mackie and Ramirez reflected on their careers, the industry, and the strange balancing act of fame.

So, while Mackie may not fully understand why his face has taken over social media, he’s officially entered the meme hall of fame.
