In recent interviews, best-selling author George R.R. Martin has indicated that there are chances of a film adaptation of the popular video game Elden Ring. This is a significant update for both fans of the game and of Martin, which has received unprecedented popularity ever since its release in 2022.
Speaking at an interview at IGN Fan Fest 2025, Martin said there have been talks of bringing Elden Ring into a big motion picture. Still, he clarified that he cannot say much regarding such discussions because they are in their nascent stages.
Martin said:
"Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring. We'll see if that comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was; I don't know."
The info was enough for social media users to join the meme-fest. One X user hilariously declared:
"He will never finish his books."
By the time he finishes, we'll have flying cars.
Again poking fun at Martin's speed, a user lamented their long-awaited A Song of Ice and Fire:
"We are never getting the winds of winter, my god lmaoo"
You’ll see GTA VI before you see that book in stores.
One user went on to share the accurate pictorial representation of the events:
One user commented:
"Just finish the damn book 😭"
This is the most relatable cry for help in modern literature history.
A user humorously mentioned:
"George R. R. Martin will do anything but finish The Winds of Winter, A Dream of Spring, Tales of Dunk and Egg & Fire & Blood Volume 2."
HBO is gonna write the ending before he does… again.
A user quipped:
"Whatever helps George RR martin not finish a song of fire and ice I guess 😂"
Martin’s dedication to not finishing this series is genuinely inspiring.
George R.R. Martin on Elden Ring
One of the biggest challenges for Martin's contribution to an Elden Ring movie is his continuous writing of The Winds of Winter, the sixth installment in his A Song of Ice and Fire series.
The novel is heavily behind schedule from its original release date. By heavily, we mean more than thirteen years.
Therefore, finishing this novel is his first priority before pursuing other ventures such as screenplays or adaptations.
Martin stated:
"I'm a few years behind with my latest book... so that also limits the amount of things that I can do."
Finishing The Winds of Winter means any contribution he would have toward an Elden Ring movie would probably be delayed by at least three lifetimes.
Potential partnerships for adaptation
FromSoftware President Hidetaka Miyazaki was also interested in bringing Elden Ring to the screen but noted difficulties associated with seeking proper partners beyond their gaming background.
In an interview with The Guardian, Miyazaki stated:
"I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example. But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium."
"So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play. We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but there’s interest, for sure."
Elden Ring and its success

Elden Ring, by FromSoftware, is an open-world action fantasy RPG that has received multiple Game of the Year awards.
Its success lies in its engaging world-building, tough gameplay, and breathtaking visuals. It is one of the top-selling RPGs of all time with almost 30 million copies sold globally.
George R.R. Martin also worked on Elden Ring with Miyazaki, delivering lore and worldbuilding details for the game. This was one of Martin's largest forays into video game work.
The biggest question right now, though, isn't if an Elden Ring movie is being made—it's when, how, and if we'll get it before The Winds of Winter ever makes it onto bookstore shelves.
