The 82nd Golden Globe Awards went down on January 5, 2025, and let’s just say it wasn’t your usual tuxedo-and-caviar type of event. One of the event highlights was about edgy French crime comedies and throwing shade at awkward moments.
That’s where Nicolas Cage came in doing the absolute most (and we’re here for it). Cage took to the stage and announced the winner for Best Non-English Feature... it was Emilia Pérez.
Now, here’s where it gets spicy. According to one social media user, Cage looked like he was “fighting the urge to roll his eyes” as he declared the winner. Yep. The Cage face.
You know that vibe when you’re about to say something, but your face is like, “Can we pretend this didn’t happen?” Yeah. That. An X user went on to give words to his expressions, stating: "he was like "oh.. um"."
A user mentioned: "he said the karaoke bit because he thought it was going to be wicked 😭😭😭😭😭 and then he opened that paper."
Another user added: "Bro wanted his musical moment 💔"
A user stated: "To say he was disappointed is an understatement lmfao."
A comment read: "That’s some serious self-control he’s got going on there."
"My king has taste", a comment read.
"He masked his annoyance, barely resisting the urge to roll his eyes", another comment read.
A user said: "My man was like “oh…we’re doing this for real"."
Emilia Pérez Winning GG
But let’s not sleep on the real star of the evening—Emilia Pérez, which is a French musical crime comedy. The film made a serious splash, walking away with four major awards, including Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and, of course, Best Non-English Language Film.
Like, four awards. FOUR.
Emilia Pérez is about a Mexican drug lord named Juan “Manitas” Del Monte—who, plot twist, transitions into a woman named Emilia Pérez.
The film didn’t just get by with a cute premise—it earned 10 nominations, the most for any film that night.
The talent was next level, with Karla Sofia Gascon being nominated for Best Actress, and both Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez grabbing Best Supporting Actress nods.
Zoe Saldaña bagged the award for Best Supporting Actress and gave a speech that basically had the whole room crying. This was Zoe’s first-ever Golden Globe nomination, let alone win.
And then there's the best original song, “El Mal,” because what’s a musical crime comedy without a banger on the soundtrack?
What is the movie about?
So, what’s Emilia Pérez actually about? It’s a gritty, emotional, and sometimes hilarious look at Juan’s transformation into Emilia Pérez.
She’s escaping her past life of crime and violence by undergoing gender-affirming surgery, all while trying to rebuild the bridges with her estranged family.
The plot isn’t just about drama, though—it’s about identity, redemption, and the way family is never as simple as it seems.
