The two-season live adaptation of God of War has been approved by Prime Video. The announcement was first made in December 2022, and after much anticipation, the official announcement was made in March 2025 by Amazon.
The acclaimed video game series will reportedly follow the events of the 2018 game and its sequel God of War: Ragnarök.
However, users are on the edges of the seats as it was revealed that the showrunner has never actually played the game. Creator and producer Ronald D. Moore came clean in The Sackhoff Show with Katee Sackhoff.
Moore stated:
“Right now I'm working on the adaptation of this video game called God of War, that Amazon has ordered two seasons of and they asked me to come in, I'm literally in the writers room and that's my new thing.”
He further disclosed that whenever he gave it a shot, he felt that the modern-day gaming tools were too sophisticated and thus gave up.
Moore went on to point out that he hasn't played a video game since the 1980s arcade days.
"I've tried. I'm not a gamer. I took a stab at it. I grew up in the arcade era. I can do that. I can play Defender, or Asteroid, sure. But, the controllers now... I can't quite get over that. My kids, of course, do it like it's nothing. My wife can do it."
Whereas Moore abandoned gaming, fans have also abandoned hope for the expectations of the upcoming movie being good. Users flooded timelines with jokes and roasts humorously bemoaning the fact.
The audacity of Amazon to entrust the project to a person who has not ventured into this field has annoyed many. Thus, in no time at all has social media turned to jokes and taunts.
Social media reacts as Prime Video greenlights live adaptation of God of War
While others laughed and posted memes of their reactions, others were just not with it—largely because Amazon is helming the project.
Sharing a near-perfect visual depiction, a user stated:
"God of War fans hearing the showrunner never played the game."
Another user took a jab at Amazon by simply sharing a roast-worthy meme.
Fans jokingly suggested Moore at least watch some YouTube tutorials first so he has an idea of what he's getting himself into. Some others humorously cautioned against casting Vin Diesel, just in case.
One user @hzjoe03 stated:
"Someone teach this man what YouTube is and make him at least watch an entire play through 😭🙏"
Another user @EODHappyCaptain declared:
"People that haven’t played the games Shouldn’t be allowed to make the shows or movies. This should be a rule."
A user @dontcallmeraylo went on to explain (and joke):
"Not encouraging that the showrunner possibly hasn't consumed the source material. God of War is amazing franchise, would really like to see it given the treatment it deserves. Also, please don't cast Vin Diesel as Kratos."
By the looks of it, folks simply haven't let the final season of Game of Thrones go.
A user @onBrandVibes highlighted:
"Yall didn’t learn nothing from Ring of Power 😭"
Another user @solokenway added:
"Bro shouldn’t be the showrunner of God of War TV Series if he never played the games.. This smells like GoT’s Final season all over again."
And then one of the users humorously wrapped it up.
A user @corlag put it as perfectly as could be:
"The woohoo quickly turned into an uhhh...?"
