Overwatch 2’s viewership is, well... down bad. The hero-shooter titan, which once basked in the glory of Twitch dominance, has now seen its numbers drop. We’re talking a staggering dip from 28k average viewers in November to a mere 18k in December—an 11k slump.
And it’s not like December was a snooze fest for Overwatch 2 either; it was supposed to be the season of hype with the release of new hero Hazard and Season 14. Still, big yikes on that one.
Meanwhile, Marvel Rivals came swinging in. Released on December 5, Marvel Rivals surged to 275,000 viewers, crushing Overwatch 2’s vibe. And the best part is that it didn’t even need a fancy promotion.
Fans on social media have been having a field day with the whole situation. One user dropped the mic with:
“RIP Overwatch 2 dug its grave, Marvel Rivals just threw the dirt over it.”
Another one chimed in: “It’s over (watch).”
A user added: "more like "UnderWatched"."
Meanwhile, a user urged: "Ow get up on ur good foot."
Meanwhile, a user thinks: "Isn’t Marvel Rivals literally overwatch with marvel characters?"
"They might need to release Overwatch 3 at this point", a user added.
A user's "honest reaction" is, "Oh no, anyway..."
"Can another company please steal Tracer from Blizzard I really like her and I don’t want her to go down with the ship," a comment read.
Streamers ditch Overwatch 2 for Marvel Rivals
Marvel Rivals isn’t only flexing an IP; it’s got gameplay. Unlike Overwatch’s more familiar lanes, Marvel Rivals throws in some spicy mechanics like character bans. So, it’s no surprise when streamers like Bogur went from their usual 3,400 viewers to a cool 20,000.
The folks over at Blizzard must be feeling the pressure. The original hero-shooter hasn’t seen a drop like this since… well, ever. According to Streamscharts, Overwatch 2 had reached a decent peak viewership of about 125,000 in November and then settled at 64,000 in December.
If that doesn't shout "uh-oh," we don't know what does. It's like Blizzard has tried its best to put in new modes and fresh content; however, it only seems to be a Band-Aid over a gunshot wound.
Can Overwatch 2 ever recover?
In the world of competitive gaming, titles come and go—only Marvel Rivals got it right, flaunting its Marvel branding and attracting a crowd already familiar with its iconic heroes.
Overwatch 2 is still trying to convince us that its original characters have the same appeal. We get it, Blizzard. You tried. But these players are already hooked on Marvel Rivals, and no amount of new skins is going to reel them back in.
Blizzard has tried to keep the dream alive with some community engagement, but that, too, has been a little lackluster. They introduced a new 6v6 experimental mode, something fans have been begging for since Overwatch 2’s transition to 5v5 and added a holiday event to keep players entertained.
But when Marvel Rivals is out here doing the most with bans and fresh mechanics, it’s hard to stay interested in the same old thing. Plus, with Overwatch 2's original flair now feeling like the older sibling trying too hard to be cool, players are switching ships.
And let’s talk about community engagement—Marvel Rivals has absolutely nailed it. The players are hype. The content is fresh. The energy is infectious.
And Overwatch 2 is still trying to convince us that "it’s still got it."
So, the million-dollar question remains: can Overwatch 2 make a comeback? Or is it already on the road to being a Twitch relic, buried six feet under by Marvel Rivals?
