‘Freakier Friday’ trailer lands, and fans let out a sigh: "Must everything have a sequel?"

Freaky Friday is freaking back! The follow-up to the 2003 Disney original, now titled Freakier Friday, is releasing August 8 and the trailer has also dropped. If you thought body-swapping was crazy before, now you're getting generational chaos with four individuals involved.

Disney believed they were treating us to a nostalgic banquet with Freakier Friday, but not all fans were here for that. With each fan excited to catch Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan switch places once more, there's another screaming, "Why tamper with the original?!"

Some people are giving this movie a very skeptical look, not because they dislike sequels but because we’ve been here before.

Given Disney's recent history of turning much-loved classics into less-loved remakes, fans have trust issues.

One user (@godswayfoundinc) asked:

"Must everything have a sequel?"

A user (@foopser) stated:

"Why do they need to waste so much money, time and talent to make the same movie again."

A user (@drxggybunny) mentioned:

"I just know Gen Z is about to discover this and act like they invented it."

One user (@ThePowellBrosMR) speculated:

"In an age of pointless remakes and sequels, this might be the worst."

A user (@_jacobsanders_) added:

"Was this needed? No. Is it going to top the first one? No. Will I be seated for this? Absolutely."

One user (@kazskruge) put it out bluntly:

"I'm so tired of every fun 2000s movie getting a mediocre 2020s sequel in a desperate attempt to cash in on nostalgia."

What's happening in the Freakier Friday trailer?

Tess and Anna are at it again, switching bodies. But this time, they've got companions.

After a test run at going to see a fortune teller, it's over for these women. Anna finds herself awakened in her daughter's body with a resigned, "Oh no! Not again."

But this time, it's not just Tess and Anna switching—it's their daughters and stepdaughters joining the fun as well.

And for the rest of us who've been amassing old-school quotes over the decades, Anna's saying,

“My face looks like a Birkin bag that's been left out in the sun to rot!” is here to sit atop the hall of fame.

And Chad Michael Murray returns. He's doing his inner "riding a motorcycle and looking desirable" thing as Jake. You know, some of us are going to be watching it for the plot.

Hot To Go by Chappell Roan can also be heard in the trailer. It's got that upbeat, energetic feel that makes you want to dance... or switch bodies—whatever is easier.

What's Freakier Friday's plot? Why are four individuals body-swapping now?

Freakier Friday continues years down the line after the first installment's craziness and now, Anna's struggling to balance being a mother to her own daughter and soon-to-be stepdaughter.

So of course, when body-swapping happens, it's not just her world turning upside down. Tess and Anna have to contend with family relationships in a hilariously new way.

Returning for another round of body-swap in Freakier Friday are familiar faces, including Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, and Christina Vidal Mitchell.

New additions like Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, and Manny Jacinto are also joining the cast.

With a director like Nisha Ganatra (known for her work on Late Night and Transparent), it’s safe to say we’re in for a mix of smart comedy and absurd, heartwarming chaos.

And because Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are both producing as well as executive producing, we can expect Freakier Friday to hold a candle to the original.
