Materialists is an upcoming romcom movie starring Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans & Dakota Johnson. Directed by the impressive Celine Song, it has all the hallmarks of becoming her next great romantic comedy project. Dakota stars as Lucy, a matchmaker who finds herself in a hilarious love triangle with her perfect match Randy (Pedro Pascal), and her imperfect ex John (Chris Evans).
Fans react hilariously to the official trailer of Materialists being released
Enamored by the stellar cast, fans have been waiting for updates about Materialists for the past several months, but the wait is now officially over. The fans' thirst was quenched by the spectacularly-made trailer which was released recently. The film's trailer reveals John’s cheesy attempts to win Lucy back, including saying with a straight face a line about seeing "wrinkles and children that look like you." Meanwhile, Randy is just trying to be the “unicorn” she dreams of.
The trailer for 'Materialists' looks like a riot and we can't wait to see what Celina Song has lain in waiting for us. Predictably, the trailer release also had the netizens in splits as they laughed at the absurdity of the sneak peek from the movie. Discussions ranged from Marvel references to making fun of the plot of the film. Even the affable Pedro Pascal caught strays, proving that the internet is merciless:
"Good to see Pedro Pascal getting cast in a movie. He's hardly in anything.", joked one fan (via X / @AdamInHTownTX)
"Who is Pedro’s agent That guy is the best agent of all time", quipped another (via X / @mask_bastard)
The outstanding feature of the coming 'Materialists' movie is its star-studded ensemble, which is not to be taken lightly. Celine is really about to pull off a blinder here! An even more remarkable fact about the movie is that all of the leads in the movie already have, or are going to have, a Marvel movie under their belt. What are the odds of that happening? We can't believe it either but fans were quick to latch onto the fact:
"Captain America, Mr. Fantastic and Madame Web", commented one keen-eyed fan (via X / @Austin_Medzz)
"Reed and Johnny reunited", joked another fan (via X / @ForbiddenArms)
Chris Evans may be synonymous with playing the role of Captain America, but he also played the role of Johnny Storm, a.k.a the Human Torch in the original Fantastic Four. The movie was released back in 2005. Don't fret, you're not old. Pop culture nerds like me tend to keep records of such things.
Of course, one staple of all the Marvel movies nowadays is the mention of multiverses. Apparently, nothing is off-limits when you enter this maddeningly crazy world of fan fiction, where you could even find Dr. Doom fighting as one of the good guys to save the world. Fans roasted the cast as multiverses came into the picture once again:
"That one time Captain America/Johnny Storm was in a love triangle with Madame Webb and Reed Richards", said one amused fan (via X / @Krisiku)
While some fans were busy with making Marvel references, others demanded some changes be made to the movie instead. While one fan came up with a hilarious alternative title for the movie- Avenger: Past Lives, another asked for Chemistry to be brought back instead:
"Another Love Triangle. Bored with geometry in movies, bring the chemistry back." implored the fan (via X / @foopser)
The trailer for Materialists did a splendid job of playing to the fans' emotions and building up anticipation for the movie. As Randy and John compete for Lucy's affection, we can expect plenty of comedic chaos and romantic mishaps in the movie. We certainly can't wait to see it play out on the big screen. Who knew matchmaking could be so complicated?
Materialists is slated to be released in theatres on June 13, 2025.
