Jon Favreau simply can't lose at Disney+. Having conquered galaxies far, far away with The Mandalorian and brought CGI jungle beasts to life in The Jungle Book and The Lion King, he's now targeting Disney's first forgotten classic - Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
Yes, that long-lost, sassy bunny bunny who ambled so Mickey Mouse could trot is finally having his time in the sun. Favreau is working on a hybrid live-action/animated Oswald series for Disney+, combining state-of-the-art visuals with the rabbit's century-long attitude issue.
For those who don't know, Oswald was basically Mickey's bad-boy older brother - until legal intrigue pulled him out of Disney's grasp, compelling Walt to invent the mouse that made history.
Now, after being out of circulation for years (and a small revival in a series of theme park appearances and video games), Oswald is leaping back onto the screen in what will hopefully be his biggest comeback yet. As soon as the news came out, someone took to his X account and commented:
"disney digging up oswald like he’s mickey’s long-lost cousin. favreau might actually make it work."
And for real, they're not wrong. Disney did go whole hog archaeologist on this one, dusting off Oswald like he's some forgotten relative of the Mouse family reunion. Before you know it, they'll be digging up even more lost characters - Horace Horsecollar return, anyone?
But if anyone can pull this off, it's Jon Favreau. The dude transformed a puppet into the internet's beloved baby (Grogu supremacy) and got us emotionally invested in CGI lions. If he can pull Oswald off, he might as well be Disney's official fixer at this point.
The internet didn't wait long to respond to Disney's newest resurrection scheme, and the takes are as crazy as Oswald himself. From Mickey nervously side-eying his long-lost cousin jokes to individuals genuinely shocked Disney remembered Oswald even exists, the responses are absolute gold.
And, of course, there's the standard mix of excitement, confusion, and that one person asking who Oswald is. Let's jump into the best fan reactions to this surprise comeback!
Netizens have reacted as the live-action/animated Oswald the Lucky Rabbit series is in the works at Disney+
Naturally, the internet joked about it, with some commenting Disney exhumed Oswald like a lost relic from the Mickey Mouse Museum. Others are just amazed Favreau is out here bringing back characters like he's building the Disney+ Avengers:
"Mickey won't stand for this,"@joe_b_smitty joked.
"That sounds like the worst thing ever," @ReelAesthetica commented.
"Disney finally giving Oswald the respect he deserves! It only took… almost 100 years," @FilmFolioAppl hilariously commented.
And then there are people who just post to post - adding random emojis, saying it looks interesting but nothing more. As if the executives at Disney are refreshing the responses, panicking because some random user is not excited enough. Some say Oswald finally got the chance:
"oswald finally getting his revenge arc," @noxlonga sarcastically commented.
"bro been waiting 100 years for his moment," @debayo_xx hilariously wrote.
"nah they’re cancel it within 5 years," @FazbearFanverse wrote.
Some acclaimed Oswald, dubbing him the return king of Disney's forgotten heroes. Others simply want to see him break free from the shadow of his more popular mouse cousin:
"Finally Oswald getting some recognition," @killahday commented.
"2025 is saved," @EnTVVO wrote.
Love it or ridicule it, Oswald is officially returning, and Disney is making sure we remember him this time around. Whether or not this show becomes the next big thing or simply gives way to more Mickey vs. Oswald debate, one thing is certain - Favreau has that magic touch, and Disney+ will never be short of nostalgia projects to exhume.
