Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield’s now-iconic Golden Globes kiss was the highlight of the moment. During one episode of Variety’s Actors on Actors series that took place not long ago, two movie industry-leading actors revisited the kiss that intrigued Hollywood.
It happened at the award ceremony when Reynolds who was expecting to clinch the Best Actor award for Deadpool ended up being defeated by Ryan Gosling for La La Land. Instead of moping over defeat, Reynolds sought humor in a full-blown passionate clinch on Garfield, seated next to him.
Of course, the audience proceeded to capture their amusing reactions. An X (formerly Twitter) user mentioned: "Still can’t believe this happened 😂🙌🔥"
Another user called it "Spideypool rights."
"My true Roman Empire!!!!!!!!!", said a user.
A user mentioned: "Most random thing I saw on the internet today."
A user humorously went on to say: "I'll riot if this doesn't get reenacted 😐"
A user suggested: "We need a 4K remake of this kiss."
"Deadpool and Spiderman shippers must be going nuts", a user stated.
A user thinks: "This is probably the closest we will get to a Spiderman and Deadpool movie."
The context of the Golden Globes kiss
This viral moment was created during a banter before the reception began but was perfectly suited for the occasion. Garfield revealed that he told Reynolds:
“If they say your name and you win, don’t kiss your wife [Blake Lively] just kiss me”.
When Reynolds didn’t win, the two changed strategy, and took their chance at an impromptu kiss that was not captured on camera during the show. The kiss was deeply blurred and can only be seen fully in a wide shot, and was drowned by Gosling’s acceptance speech. But internet sleuthing took care of that.
Thinking back to the moment Garfield said that he felt a little bad for stealing Gosling’s moment.
“I also retrospectively felt a little bit insensitive towards Ryan's moment,” Garfield shared.
Reynolds quipped, “Nobody actually noticed until later and it was actually kind of perfect.”
The aftermath and playful regrets
After the clip became popular, the actors had to answer questions – and jokes – about the kiss. Andrew Garfield admitted he even apologized to Ryan Gosling, suggesting that it probably stole the show from his victory.
Of course, Reynolds decided to go quite childish and claimed that he “egged Gosling’s house” in response to said loss of award.
Nevertheless, a kiss is now associated with their friendship, as well as the mood behind the Golden Globe Awards. Since then, fans have come to appreciate the moment as one of the most happy, and even fortunate, meetings between celebrities on live television.
