A cold dose of reality was served to Wicked at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards on January 5, 2025, as it was once again proven that not even a whimsical musical is safe from the drama of awards season.

Adaption of the beloved musical, Wicked arrived at the ceremony with four nominations and left with only one. The film bagged the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award, but its other nominations turned into glittering participation trophies.

Fans had a lot to say about this outcome. On social media, users were quick to roast the situation, with one user tweeting:

"For anyone wondering, they won the fake category."
Another user asked: "Just 1???? After all the effort that they did?"
A user added: "Mind u the award they won was made up this year… they played in their face."
A comment read: "They’re lucky to even have won that tbh."
Another comment read: "“Only one” I wouldn’t even be that generous that category was just to give films like this a globe 😭"
"And it’s the most insignificant award of the night", a comment read.
"Wow.......that is awful," said no one!", another comment read.

Amid the Wicked drama, not all was lost

Despite all the hype, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the queens of Wicked, didn’t get their Golden Globe moment.

Erivo, nominated for Best Actress in a Motion PictureMusical or Comedy, was outdone by Demi Moore for her role in Emilia Pérez, while Grande, up for Best Supporting Actress, was pipped by Zoe Saldaña, also for Emilia Pérez.

Earlier, Grande admitted she had "tears of happiness" just for being nominated.

Director Jon M. Chu was the film's shining star at the ceremony. Despite the Wicked upsets, he was quick to thank the Golden Globes for honoring the film’s commercial success and artistic merit.

“We can still make art that is a radical act of optimism that is empowerment and that is joy - this means so much to all of us.”

After all, with billions in box office receipts, it’s not like Wicked was walking away empty-handed.

Wicked didn't manage to sweep the awards on a night when Hollywood had its nails biting.

The cinematic juggernaut that narrates a story of friendship, identity, and good old witchy drama was supposed to send waves, but it hardly made a ripple.

The magic of Golden Globes did not really work for acting categories, but its box office story is something else. As of now, the film has grossed over $1.11 billion across the globe since its release on November 22, 2024.

Critics are raving about its stunning visuals and the way it staged and adapted the Broadway musical to the screen.

While its Broadway predecessor managed to tie up friendship and identity themes in a whirlwind of wicked fun, the movie raises it to another level– one of identity, self-discovery, and social expectations.
