On Sunday night, Netflix upped the ante in the biggest of ways with the airing of a live NFL game, none other than a Christmas Day showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The stream came with some chatter out there. Netflix merged one part of football with a whole lotta Squid Game, leaving the internet confused.
Viewers were all set to watch some NFL action on Netflix: the Chiefs versus the Steelers. Then, out of nowhere, actors dressed as the infamous Pink Guards from Squid Game show up on the screen, waving those iconic "terrible towels"-- yeah, Steelers fans know what's up. So, the actors were hyping up Season 2 of the show.
While some fans invested in the game were salty, others grabbed the popcorn and enjoyed the entire Squid Game invasion. Online users also chimed in with hilarious responses. An X user said:
"If season 2 doesn't cook I'll crashout."
Another user said: "They definitely picked sides for sure huh."
A user humorously added: "Those fans better watch out for those guards, or they might disappear to some remote island somewhere."
Yet another user mentioned: "When you realize the referees are more ruthless than the Squid Game guards."
One comment read: "That’s one way to mix up the game!"
A comment read: "Imagine Squid Game guards trying to fix Netflix’s glitches during the game. ‘Red light: Buffering. Green light: Stream on.’ Who else felt like they were playing a survival game just to watch the match?"
Netflix's NFL debut
But this wasn't just about some stunt promoting Squid Game's next season. This was Netflix finally formally making its big debut in NFL broadcasting. Huge flex. But, well, it didn't exactly go off without a hitch.
Right out of the gate, there were some tech issues for viewers. You know, when you are watching a game, the audio just cuts out.
Chiefs dominate
Meanwhile, the Chiefs, led by Patrick Mahomes, walloped the Steelers 29-10. The victory ensured them a spot as the number-one seed in the AFC playoffs, which is a big boost for them. Mahomes threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns, while Travis Kelce made some great catches at the right moments to keep the drive going.
Still, let’s not underestimate the Chiefs’ defense, as the squad sacked Steelers’ QB Russell Wilson FIVE times and induced two turnovers.
Wilson could throw about 200 yards, but he was under pressure, which cost him a lot of chances.
Squid Game Season 2
Alright, alright, let's get to the meat of it, which really set the internet abuzz: Squid Game Season 2. Netflix dropped the announcement during the game that Season 2 is a go, coming out on December 26, 2024. All seven episodes are dropping at once, so you know what that means… binge-watchers, assemble.
Season 2 picks up where the first season left off, with Seong Gi-hun returning with a whole new vibe. He's thirsty for revenge as he wants those behind these twisted, fatal challenges brought down. Expect more mind-bending games plus, of course, some showdown between Gi-hun and the mysterious Front Man.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk has confirmed that Season 3 is already in the works and is set to wrap up the whole story in 2025.
